Local Natives “Airplanes” (Video)

Delectable harmonies from raved about California five-piece

How to cause a frenzy amongst the hipsters of Silver Lake? Get these guys to perform and watch the lines snake around Spaceland. It’s exactly what happened with this quintet had a redisency there back in August, and with the debut, Gorilla Manor, set to be released February 16th via Frenchkiss Records, we’ll be seeing them on the circuit… and at Coachella and SXSW. A proper tour is in the works. Until then, watch the video for “Airplanes,” which is about keyboardist Kelcey Ayer wanting to meet his pilot grandpa.

The Pixies ‘Doolittle’ Live @ Hollywood Palladium, 11.05.09

It’s been half a decade since The Pixie’s triumphant reunion performance at Coachella. During that time, the band has revitalized the reunion industry for Alternative Nation alumni acts, played every major festival on earth, done a couple of theater tours, and refused to put out any new music (although Frank Black did release his best post-Pixies work to date as Grand Duchy.) So it was hardly a surprise when The Pixies announced they’d be hitting the road again, this time to perform their classic 1989 album Doolittle. How many people would come to hear one of the best 38:38 seconds of alternative rock? It turns out enough to sell out three nights in Hollywood.

First of all, the Books might be the best name for a band ever. That being said, classifying its music is just as difficult as locating some obtuse non-fiction books at your local mom and pop shop. Is it history, journalism, travel writing? So, just take in this duo’s music – whether or not it’s IDM, indie stylings or other…
