Sugar & Gold – Get Wet! (Review)

Sugar & Gold

Get Wet!

Released by Antenna Farm Records

It doesn’t take too long of a listen to Sugar & Gold before it becomes apparent that this bold and plucky electro quintet is definitely not aiming to be categorized. And that’s okay, because after producing for acts like the roguish Gravy Train!!!! of the underground indie-dance scene and hitting the road with the eclectically ornate Of Montreal, one could only expect the consequential product to be far from conservative; Get Wet! meets such an expectation and it does so with idiosyncratic style.

The Ruby Suns – Fight Softly (Review)

The Ruby Suns

Fighty Softly

Released by Sub Pop

The Ruby Suns’ third record Fight Softly—the first on acclaimed indie-backer Sub  Pop—is a lot of things: happy, evocative, curious, and experimental. But for all the labels and feelings the album conjures and provokes, Fight Softly ends up sounding like a bunch of beats and blips gesticulating wildly instead of a cohesive body of melodies and songs.

jj – jj n° 3 (Review)

jj

jj n° 3

Released by Secretly Canadian/Sincerely Yours

Sweden’s latest indie buzz band, jj, veer toward the electronica-tinged pop sounds of their countrypeople—think Robyn, The Knife, Air France—on sophomore record jj n° 3, proving there’s no need to ditch a profitable formula. But jj’s elusive, publicity-eschewing band members Joakim Benon and Elin Kastlander, know the secret to a steady output of bright, shiny records is not-so-happy underpinnings, bringing a sense of humanity to what, on the surface, can come across as lullaby music.
