Sonar Festival Barcelona 2010 (Review)

Sonar By Night

Back in London and it’s taken almost a week to recover from the rave fall out that is Barcelona’s Sonar Festival. And I’m sure that’s an excuse the other 84,975 attendees can attest to too because this year was particularly special. Yes, there were the big names that played over the three days. But these are the very same acts that will be headlining every European (and many U.S.) summer festivals in 2010. On the somewhat confused Tube ride back home on UK turf, I saw posters for LCD Soundsystem headlining Wireless and Roxy Music and Dizzee Rascal, Lovebox. And yes, 30,000 people did ram out the vast, industrial expanse of the airplane hanger-like void that is Sonar By Night, to rave (or most likely rock) out to the Chemical Brothers, LCD Soundsystem, Roxy Music, Hot Chip and Dizzee Rascal. Or smooch away to the return of Air. At one delirious point I even found myself hands in the air, pumping gun finger salutes to Booka Shade’s v-drum assault as the sun was coming up on the Saturday morning.

But what felt different about this year’s festival was that it brought together a sprawling, yet tightly knit group of worldwide artists, friends, promoters and fans, all fiending the very best hip hop, techno, dubstep and electronica-inspired music of 2010. And each and every member of this global family represented to the fullest, when each and every member was on stage at Sonar By Day, performing at Sonar By Night or raving out to an off-Sonar Barcelona warehouse party. It’s the super supportive family of beat kings and queens that made this year’s event so unforgettable.

Kele “Tenderoni” (Video)

We always suspected that it was Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke who was leading the foursome down the electronic path over the group’s three albums and countless remixes. Well now he’s confirmed it with a solo track of pure big room dance beats and a robotastic video to match. Sadly, this isn’t the most original beat to come out of the typically flawless discography of XXXChange and Hudon Mohawke. The good news is we now get to add Kele to our list of dance divas with one name. Look out Kylie.

Caspa, Benga & Hudson Mohawke Live in NYC: Built By Mean Red (Review)

An unforgettable debut night of bass and brain-smashing.

“Built by Mean Red” is a phrase that’s been popping in New York City for quite some time now; from parties in backyards to raves in dim sum joints, the ladies of Mean Red Productions eloquently build up amazing events from the ground up, throwing small bouts of controlled chaos to outdoor eloquence with sangrias afloat. In other words, they’re all over the place and they’re dominating party regulars without them noticing. So, when the time came to announce their first ever Friday event in conjunction with Girls & Boys at Webster Hall, there was an uncertain feeling of who would show up and how many would come to revel in Webster Hall’s first-ever dubstep extravaganza, courtesy of Hudson Mohawke, (WARP/LuckyMe) Caspa, (Sub Soldiers/Dub Police) and Benga (Tempa). What happened in the end was one of the most exciting, chaotic …

SXSW Day Three Recap: BBQs & Beats

Day Three of SXSW was a burner in terms of what could and would happen in terms of pleasant surprises. Starting off with daytime drinking at Carrera’s SXSW haven, the meandering began at the FADER Fort to meet and chat with WARP/LuckyMe wunderkind Hudson Mohawke, we ran into a man in a kilt. The day just got weirder after that; with every obstacle trying to interfere with the continuation of Day Three’s set-in-stone journey. Traffic, cancellations and BBQ were the main reasons. Walking into Stubb’s, there was an expectation that wobbler-extraordinaire Rusko was going to spin a set in the outdoor space. After eating some mac n’ cheese, the twitterverse said otherwise. Rusko couldn’t come to Austin due to layovers in Colorado, and Beats Antique, the headliner, would …

Cubic Zirconia Tour: SXSW Day 2 (Video & MP3)

Austin is rowdy, y’all.

Hoards of hipsters and freaks mob 6th Street and all adjoining arteries. 20 closed off blocks of street bands, kissing booths, food carts and side shows set the scene for the tens of thousands. I’m shocked at the amount of quality you get on the street alone, from the food to the french horned Amish lookin’ crazies, everyone is good at something. I feel like Anthony Bourdain with these street carts right now.
