A Decade Of Deep Space :: Francois K’s Top 10 Tunes

In the era of superstar DJs and mega-festivals, the notion of the weekly DJ residency is a dying one. Even in New York, a city famous for its self-contained club scene—from Larry Levan at the Paradise Garage to Danny Tenaglia at Vinyl—you’d be hard pressed to find a successful night helmed by the vision of one artist.

Unless you head out on a Monday for Deep Space, the weekly party powered by legendary DJ Francois K. Deep Space is celebrating it’s 10th anniversary this Monday (March 18) at Cielo, the Manhattan venue that has hosted the party since the very beginning in 2003. Joining FK on the decks is Hotflush label head Scuba (who recently wrapped his own infamous Sub:Stance residency at Berlin’s infamous Berghain).

From techno and house to disco, left-field, ambient and the all important dub, the music policy at Deep Space has always been as diverse as the many guests who have taken to the booth over the past 10 years—Carl Craig, Gilles Peterson, Theo Parrish and U-Roy to name just a few. To celebrate the 10 year mark, we asked Francois K to tell us his 10 favorite tracks from a decade of Deep Space.

Start the list after the jump.

Percussion Lab Announces “Cambio” Compilation – Available Now (MP3)

The venerable New York institution Percussion Lab has grown significantly over the past seven years; from an eclectic radio show to a full-fledged web-streaming party bonanza; previous guests include the likes of Scuba, SBTRKT, Dorian Concept, Daedelus, Krystal Klear and way too much more to add to this list. Needless to say, the Percussion Lab family is a collection of past and present NYC locals, along with previous guests that residents Braille (Praveen Sharma of Sepalcure) and Nooka Jones have maintained close ties to throughout the years. Judging by the artists compilation, there are plenty of vibes to behold. Cambio is a compilation that features exclusive tracks from previous Percussion Lab favorites such as Machinedrum, Lando Kal, and XI as well as new cuts from bubbling acts like Archie Pelago, Contakt and Enoe. Here’s what the PLAB guys had to say about this compilation and their contributions on it.

“Over the years, the bedroom producers and shy novices we championed in years past have become some of the most influential names in the world of electronic music. We’re offering this compilation of exclusive tracks as a way of continuing our mission to provide a home for producers and DJs to host their original music and mixes free of charge, and to be able to continue supporting our local community by booking the most forward thinking artists possible for our events. We hope you can help us keep doing all of this, for free, by buying some this complication full of amazing music by some our closest, oldest, and most talented friends. “

They’ve been gracious enough to share the first cut of the compilation, “Friends and Lovers” from Ghostly staple Shigeto. Check out the link to the track as well as the compilation link, post-jump.

Jimmy Edgar Exclusive Mix + Interview (Podcast)

JIMMY EDGAR
Exclusive Mix + Interview

There’s certain artists that capture an essence that’s wholly stimulating to a dancefloor; Jimmy Edgar is one of those artists that provides a combination of intellectual and auditory stimulation. Since the days of his releases on WARP and Merck, the now-Berlin-based producer has been pounding out his own brand of interstital and sensual grooves, attracting crowds that are hungry for next-level jaunts about the unknown realms of their strangest desires. Edgar is a master at accessing a dancefloor’s core values and cascading his sound with a confidence that’s truly his own. Currently, his single on Hotflush, “This One’s For The Children” is an retro-futuristic take on 80s electro, draped in velvet and spacesuits. Yeah, it’s that good. It’s only a teaser for his forthcoming LP on the label, entitled Majenta (out in early May). Jimmy took the time to speak to URB about how his creative process has thrived due to his move to Berlin, as well as providing us with a mix that’s a throwback response to his good buddy Machinedrum’s URB podcast. Check out the interview and mix after the jump.
