Nas and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley are Distant Relatives (Interview)

Nas and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley are releasing their highly-anticipated collaborative studio album, Distant Relatives on Tuesday, May 18. And a month-long tour with opener Nneka is set to kick off three days later. The album title refers not only to the bond between the artists, but the connection to their African ancestry, which inspired the album both musically and lyrically. It features several guest appearances including Lil Wayne,  K’NAAN and Stephen Marley. In their own words: “What we’re about to do right now is go back. Back to a time when rap’s greatest hits were created in basement soundrooms, not corporate boardrooms. When dancehall and hip-hop music was all about moving the crowd not “moving units.” We met up with them at the very posh Sunset Marquee Hotel in West Hollywood.

Club Review: DECOR opening night @ Henry Fonda Theater, L.A. (3.20.2010)

What happens when you open up a new club and you don’t even show up for the opening?  That question was probably on the minds of more than a few who attended the premiere night of Décor, Insomniac’s latest foray into Saturday night Hollywood entertainment.  After all, the local nightlife media had been hyping up the fact that this new club would be going head-to-head with its former business partner Giant, which had bolted from Vanguard and re-settled in its old Avalon digs.  So where was Pasquale Rotella, the founder and driving force behind Insomniac?  Well, that was no secret; he was a good hour away in San Bernardino, throwing the much-touted Nocturnal Festival at the Orange Show the same night….a handy way to duck the petty ridiculousness of L.A. clubbing politics, to be sure.  Of course, when you have …

Live Review: Uffie @ Cinespace in LA (03.16.10)

The sidewalk outside Cinespace in Hollywood was a chaos with people trying to get in 3 different lines for the sold out show. Uffie (Anna-Catherine Hartley) was back in town, performing for the first time in over a year and a half, and back where her American hype started. This was a night of leather jackets and mustaches, feminists (of both sexes) and hip hop kids. There was celebrity-spotting in the house, Steve Aoki himself and and Apl.de.ap with an entourage. Them Jeans warmed up the hipster crowd with Kid Cudi tracks that everybody sang along to.

Uffie finally hit the stage at 12:30, and she had a new DJ backing her. Uffie looked part Euro and part American Apparel, which makes sense being Miami-born, Hong Kong-raised and Paris-based. She invited the crowd to storm the stage, and her almost overly enthusiastic fans did not hesitate. Maybe this was a move to hide the lack of performance, to cover it up with fan frenzy on stage. …MORE

LCD Soundsystem New Album Behind-The-Scenes (Video)

Hear part of a new song

LCD Soundsystem have started to release some videos shot while James Murphy was in LA this past summer recording the follow-up to Sound Of Silver. The sessions took place at the Hollywood Hills mansion where the Red Hot Chili Peppers infamously recorded Blood Sugar Sex Magic. The house is also legend to once been Houdini’s home—also where the Beatles first tried acid and Jimi Hendrix experimented with gay sex. But legend aside, you do see Murphy and his cohorts having a good time, and you can hear a slight snippit of what is probably a new song.
