Motor City brothers Apollo Brown and Guilty Simpson have wasted no time pounding the pavement for “Dice Game.” In the past few weeks Apollo has toured Australia and New Zealand while Guilty did a lean and mean west coast run that spanned Los Angeles to Seattle before hitting the NBC/Universal lot to be on Carson Daly’s show.

Today, while our road dogs get a breather, they release the all new, non-album, bonus track “Parkour” to announce the release of their new limited edition wax (ivory vinyl w/ bonus 45 featuring two non-album cuts). This first bonus is named after the military training parkour where practitioners need to burst through an obstacle course using the terrain to gain advantage. In similar fashion, Guilty takes the terrain laid out by Apollo Brown and powers through it like a linebacker with a vengeance. The sound has a bit of an electronic tinge, something not so present on the official LP but very much welcome here.

Named after the highest rank awarded to Sumo Wrestlers, Philly beatsmith Small Professor returns to the ring with his latest offering, Yokozuna. The eight track projects consists of remixes taken from his noteworthy debut producer compilation Gigantic, Vol. 1, which was released back in January. As an added bonus, Small Pro offers a new cut titled “The Easiest Way” which once again features Guilty Simpson over a Pro’s hypnotic use of strings and keys. This track should also come as a welcomed surprise by fans of Breaking Bad for its well timed dialogue sequence between Walter White and Jesse that takes place moments before Guilty delivers his lyrical assault. The duo make a fitting emcee/producer combination, so hopefully we’ll be hearing from from these two sooner than later. Apollo Brown chops a fiery gospel organ into an incendiary track that pulses with life. Guilty wastes no time turning into a microphone bully, showing just why he considers himself as nasty as black licorice. Cocky, brazen and above all ill, Apollo and Guilty are deadly enough as a duo but on this track they enlist their Left Coast brethren, Planet Asia, for a few bars of that west side grime. Fresno’s finest catches Guilty’s lob and slam-dunks his verse.

Now that Dice Game has rolled out it’s looking like snake eyes for the lames and a cool seven for our Motor City champs.

In a city in depression, rife with corruption and crime, many people have found an outlet in music. Amidst a scene that has played a pivotal role in modern hip hop and electronic music, Guilty Simpson and Apollo Brown emerge, together, as the next up to bat. “Dice Game,” the collaborative album from the two, is Detroit through and through: uncompromising, gritty and soulful.
