Electric Zoo 2011: Hits & Misses

A quickfire retrospective of a long weekend at Randall's Island.

Made Event’s seminal Randall’s Island event Electric Zoo 2011, sure had lofty expectations; not only did they add an extra day to their festivities, but the lineup, the stages and all things on-site were on a grander scale. Everything from stage design, booth coordination, food trucks and even security was maintained on a next-level tip. But was the lineup up to par with its surroundings for all three days? Also, how would the organizers respond to the vast dust problem of last year? Would there be surprises, duds and everything in between? Check out the hits and misses of Electric Zoo 2011 after the jump.

URB’s Top Picks for Electric Zoo 2011

Made Event’s monster festival on roids, Electric Zoo is back with an extra day and a massive lineup. While last year’s event was fantastic, this year’s lineup looks to overtake the previous incarnation by pouring out a ton of proper acts; sure there will be “stars” like Tiësto, David Guetta and Armin van Buuren, but there will also be our favorites on other, smaller stages. No, they’re not on the Billboard charts or playing stadium tours, but we love them and think they’re DAMN GOOD. With that said, here’s our recommendations on who to check out at the festival.

Various Artists – ‘Spike Jonze’s I’m Here Soundtrack’ (Review)

Various Artists

Spike Jonze's I'm Here Soundtrack

Released by Chocolate Industries

“I’m Here. A love story in an absolut world.” Unless director Spike Jonze is actually referring to the vodka, an “e” should follow the “t” in “absolut,” then conveying a pure world, an unconditional world, one that is complete, and perfect in quality and nature. Gui Boratto – Renaissance: The Mix Collection (Review)

Gui Boratto

Renaissance: The Mix Collection

Released by Renaissance

When one of electronic music’s most respected staples, Renaissance, and Brazilian DJ and producer Gui Boratto teamed up for the first time, the result can surely be compared to a spacey sound journey through an atmospheric rainforest. Boratto gets in the mix with this groovy third release for the Renaissance name, following the likes of M.A.N.D.Y, Dave Seaman and James Zabiella. For the mix, Boratto picked tracks by some of his favorite artists and producers of the moment—Tricky, Josh Wink, Martin Buttrich, Lusine, Christian Smith, Mathew Jonson, and Bomb the Base, to name a few—as well as his own material, including four never heard before productions. While one might get locked in from song two, which is a John Tejada remix of Boratto’s 2009 “Take My Breath Away,” almost every song is a trip of its own, including Tricky’s “Past Mistake” making for a surprisingly eerie, yet beautiful ending.

The critically-acclaimed multimedia art and music event boasted an attendance of over 13,000 in 2008. Past performers over the years include Autechre, Diplo, Green Velvet, Modeselektor, Apparat, Vladislav Delay, Michael Mayer, Gui Boratto, Justice, Matmos, Derrick May, Carl Craig, Stars of the Lid, Murcof, The Field, Deadmau5, Fennesz, among many others. In addition to these performance programs, Decibel also includes a professional section featuring panels and workshops, serving as a forum for musicians and industry professionals alike.

A community arts festival with an educational component, Decibel has always been “non-profit” in essence, by no means a “money-making”venture for its organizers. However, this year Decibel Festival is making it official and has changed to 501.c3 status in efforts to continue the festivals growth by attracting grants and charitable contributions. In preparation for the festival this …
