Gorillaz/James Murphy/Andre 3000 :: “DoYaThing” (Video)

Today marks the release of the official video for the Gorillaz/James Murphy/Andre 3000 collaboration, “DoYaThing” for Converse. And like so many other things Gorillaz-related, it doesn’t get really good until Jamie Hewlett gets involved. The clip depicts a CGI rendition of 2-D roaming a trashed house shared by some of his cartoon cohorts. But it’s hardly worth describing the nonsensical nature of the clip. Just watch and enjoy.

DOWNLOAD Gorillaz ft. Andre 3000 & James Murphy :: “DoYaThing” (MP3)

First rule of the internet—all previews, clips and snippets must be followed with the full version of a song. So here is “DoYaThing,” the collaboration between Gorillaz, Andre 3000 and James Murphy done for Converse’s Three Artists series. Is the song good (does anyone ask that anymore?)? It’s no one’s finest work, and definitely not the sum of it’s parts, surprising if only because Gorillaz has a history of excellent collaborations. But we still like to hear Andre on the mic again, especially with the double-time/half-time tempo.

So that’s it, right? More marketing-driven musical mediocrity gone past? Not so fast. There’s still a music video coming Feb 29, along with an extended mega-version. So, ya know, the video will probably be clever.

Gorillaz, James Murphy & Andre 3000 Collaborate For Converse

Audio Snippet and Making Of Video

Converse’s Three Artists, One Song, project has certainly had more hits than misses. We especially liked the Hot Chip x New Order x Hot City tune from 2010. And the latest in the series brings together three artists who are no strangers to collaboration—Gorillaz, James Murphy and Andre 3000. A 30 sec. clip of the tune has leaked out, along with a 60 sec. “making of the video” clip, which gives a fair idea of the tune, “Do Ya Thing,” although it still leaves Andre’s bit a mystery. Something to look forward to then.

Daft Punk, Deadmau5, Gorillaz + More Action For Japan

Major labels don’t have the best reputation. Corporate conglomorates flailing for their very existence while still trying to sell crap music to a public who has zero moral issue with robbing them blind. This rep may or may not be totally deserved, but it’s nice to see one of these giants doing something good for humanity. And in the process reminding us that some damn good music comes out on major labels as well.

EMI has announced the EMI Family 4 Japan auction, a series of EBay offers where you can bid on things like signed Daft Punk photos and race LCD Soundsystem vinyl, with all proceeds going to Japan relief efforts. And the compnay has promised to match the donations, up to $1 Million. Check it out and see if you cant’ live without a …
