One of the worst things about seeing a great band live is how disappointing they can be on record. It can be a hard thing to capture: you can't expect 100 crazy sweaty dudes to jump around in unison every time you put a new disc on your stereo. It always comes as a relief, then, when a band figures how to take the energy of their live sound and accurately portray it over a pair of shitty speakers.

Gogol Bordello is definitely a live band, and fortunately ...

First off, a big thumbs up to everybody for keeping the Empire Polo Field clean. For those not at Coachella 2006, the Empire Polo Field was literally a obstacle course of empty bottles and half-filled cups filled with lemonade and some sort of human regurgitation. This year, people were actually cleaning up after themselves and collecting other people’s empty bottles so they can trade it for one fresh bottle of water. It’s true what they say, “one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure.”

A very, very, big thumbs down to Coachella for not letting independent vendors in the festival. Don’t get me wrong, I love the fact that the absence of these merchants led to me having a easier time parking my car but what can we do when we’re waiting …

Day 1: Tight Shorts and Mad Beats

It was hot. Sweat couldn't find enough places to fall out of, but smiling gangs of music fans danced from tent to tent, as if their tight pants weren't chafing, and the hair wax streaming into their eyes wasn't blurring their vision any more than the scalding yellow rays seeping into their brand new festival tans wasn't going to hurt in the morning. Day One.

Short-short neon colored track shorts and tight denim cutoffs also seem to be popular among the male congregation. The girls are in dresses, bikinis, and giant sunglasses; straw hats of all shapes and sizes abound. The crowd is here from Canada, the UK, Australia, Mexico, and all over the states to revel in their hipness, and burn, burn, burn.
