WATCH This Unearthed 22-Year-Old ‘Acid Jazz’ Documentary (Video)

If you think dubstep is the first genre to become maligned from it’s origins via severe co-opting of the mainstream, then you clearly don’t recall (or weren’t around for) acid jazz. This collision of England’s long-standing jazz dance scene with the late-80s acid house explosion launched a few significant careers (Gilles Peterson), a couple classic acts (Brand New Heavies) and an a superstorm of insipid Acid Jazz compilations and TV ad licensing (Us3 “Cantaloop”).

This recently unearthed 30-minute documentary of the acid jazz scene circa 1990 showcases the rich origins of the scene, before the mainstream caught on and ruined it. It features interviews with Gilles Peterson, Brand New Heavies, Snowboy and Steve Williamson. It also showcases a lot of footage from the legendary Dingwalls club where the sound first took root.
