The anticipation is building and you heard it here, folks. Phase 2 of Ultra Music Festival 12 was just announced and it looks like the producers are pulling out all the stops to bring the absolute best of the best in electronic dance music. With the festival just over 40 days away, we can only imagine what surprises they have up their sleeves.
This year’s UMF represents one of the strongest and most diverse electronic line-ups ever assembled with the addition of collaborators Damian Marley & Nas, Faithless Sound System, Groove Armada Live, Will.I.Am and ummm..Little Boots. And that’s just the beginning.

Leaving the lazy river-pool at a palm tree-lined concrete oasis in Indio, CA, at 1:30 pm for Coachella, a festival goer fully expects the “10 minute drive” to take at least an hour. Entering the festival (drive, park, trek to gate, line for ticket, line for frisking) at 4:05 pm, there was just enough time for a beer with The Presets and a little chat with Crystal Method before watching the Black Keys bring down the blues before sunset. Last night, Crystal Method played their second live non-DJ set in 5 years, supporting their new album of self-produced material. After so long and with new gear, they seemed a bit antsy, but the duo’s closing set in the Sahara tent knocked the socks off everyone not weeping over the ex-Beatle singing “Yesterday,” “Helter Skelter,” and “Can’t Buy …
A group of 6 guys lined up to toss a volleyball, soccer throw-in style, into the sunroof of a car about 30 feet away. Each one failed. I said to myself, self, if all you have to do to win that car is throw a ball in the sunroof, you can do it. And I did it, no spin on the ball, dropped right in and bounced off the center console back out. I won a towel.
It got cold by the time we left 8 and 1/2 hours later so I was grateful to have it afterall.
Being at Universal Studies, where flames and bombs and water shot up beyond the outdoor stage at regular intervals, then going into Gibson Ampitheatre’s large hollow dark dome, was weird. And enhanced the I-am-inside-an-ipod-on-shuffle experience, where the wheel …
