Hailing from Germany, the son of immigrant parents, Loco Dice has been one of techno’s premier ambassadors for over a decade, sharing DJ booths and record labels with the likes of global superstars Richie Hawtin, Carl Craig and Dubfire among others. But rarely does this superstar make his was to the good old U.S. of A., where his brand of underground techno still fights an uphill battle against the the poppier side of electronic music. In December, Dice will make a rare voyage to the states to play some select gigs around the country. URB spoke with the former hip-hop DJ to get his take on the dance-hip-hop crossover, as well as his always influential Desolat label, which releases techno compilation inspired by Death Row Records!? …MORE

As if we weren’t excited enough about the return of Richie Hawtin’s Plastikman alter-ego to the live stage, this clip from the debut performance at the Timewarp Festival in Germany last month got us completely jazzed. Hawtin steps out from behind the massive LED cage and rocks some classic minimal Plastikman sounds live for all to see.
Motor City Drum Ensemble
Raw Cuts Vol. 1
Released by Faces Records
Motor City Drum Ensemble consists of just one man, Danilo Plessow, from Germany’s very own motor city, Stuttgart. He has worked under many guises, but caused quite a stir with his collection of releases on his own MCDE imprint. Now the tracks are compiled along with some exclusive unreleased material. As his moniker implies, Plessow is a fan of classic Detroit techno, but this mix shows the man also has an affinity for old-school Chicago house, not to mention vintage soul and boogie. Through his Raw Cuts series Plessow has developed a hypnotic deep house sound that simultaneously reveres the past while remaining clearly focused on the future. His soulful tunes cross genres effortlessly to bring back some soul to house and techno music. The tracks are raw ad touch on the essence of Detroit with dirty drums, ruff basslines and that hand-cut feel made famous by Theo Parrish. Combining clever sampling with a penchant for analogue equipment, MCDE has cultivated a style that is somehow incredibly loose and tight at the same time.
Story goes Fashawn, Exile and Blu are in Berlin, Germany right now for a small tour. They walk into a liquor store to get some wraps, papers, etc. Juice Magazine, a popular German-based hip hop mag just did a feature on Fashawn for his recent album, Boy Meets World but the liquor store doesn’t care. So he got kicked out.
