This past October, Georgia Anne Muldrow and DJ Romes united as Blackhouse, a crew hellbent on resurrecting the electro-inspired dance party fun of early hip-hop—with-a-modern twist. Their eponymous Mello Music Group album was greeted with arms wide open by older heads and young fans alike.

For those still out the loop, MMG and Blackhouse offer up “Lectrivunkin” for you to sample. Let the proverbial needle drop on a decent sound system and watch as people’s heads begin to bob, hips start to sway, and vibrations rise. The synth carves deep, producing a sound both beautiful and ominous. The nearly four minute song is vocal-less save for a sample reminding you the energy of this track is “out of control.”

Don’t be late to the party, Blackhouse is warmed up and groovin’. The last one to the jam is an L7…you know the rest. Blackhouse is in stores now!

Montreal emcee and producer Jai Nitai Lotus is about to release one of the most interesting hip-hop albums of 2012, Something You Feel. Raw, gritty, and heartfelt, Something You Feel is rare in part because the music comes across authentic, Jai, unaffected. The record has a few guest features, Georgia Anne Muldrow and Dudley Perkins being two on the track called “Hard Times & Blessed.” From hip-hop vet to newbie, Dudley asked Jai a few questions about his album and the state of black music and as always, it got interesting fast.

DP: What is your definition of true music?

Jai: Ahhh man, true music is sacred to me. Everyone will have there personal definition of what it is. To me it’s an honest creation, when you allow the creator to speak through you musically. Not easy to achieve, you got to feel it and believe it first.

DP: Do you think spiritual music can heal nations? If yes, how do you think this is possible?

Jai: It definitely can. That vibration is potent and almost indescribable. But to truly hear it, I think we need to have an open heart and be somehow humble enough to accept a power that is higher and greater then us, and realize we are all connected by this. Worldwide, universe-wide.

DP: Why do you think black music has become so dark and ignorant in the past ten years?

Jai: I don’t think its limited solely to black music, but to most music nowadays. It’s a complex system, that is rooted in our society in general. I think part of it has to do with the standard the music industry set, promoting mostly what is ignorant. Because of this a lot of people feel they have to play that role in order to become successful. I believe that the mass-mediums tend to exploit the people’s struggles, for profit and gain instead of using them to inform and create change. This is a form of oppression and creates a dangerous cycle for everyone.

DP: Do you believe it’s true that most ignorant black rap music is allowed only because it fuels private-owned prisons?

Jai: I wouldn’t look past that playing a part, given the history of racism. That in combination with some prisons being ran as private businesses that profit off majority black youth being incarcerated. Shit is straight twisted.

The Blackhouse is subversive and funky. The electro-disco-hip-hop hybrid of Georgia Anne Muldrow and DJ Romes aims to energize your body as well as your consciousness with their electrifying self-titled LP, Blackhouse, delivered via Mello Music Group.

Somali by Blackhouse (Georgia Anne Muldrow w/ DJ Romes)

Today, enjoy the latest leak from their album, the high-energy track “SOMALI.” Heavy political commentary is woven into wobbling bass lines and galvanizing whistles in the song that takes the listener back to block parties powered by street lights and mobile DJ systems. While some might see blatantly repeating a line like “Somali pirates are the bomb” as a tracks’ central thesis a bit gauche, The Blackhouse see it as a rightful call to celebration. For those who’ve drunk the kool-aid, Somali’s have endured crippling political tumult and exploitation of their coasts by European nations, creating the conditions for modern day piracy as a way to protect an extremely vulnerable population.

Ideal music is music that is more than the sum of its notes. The perfect beat can transcend time and space, lifting your spirit and taking your mind on a journey through the universe with your feet still on the dance floor. That is Blackhouse.

Blackhouse is uber-talented Georgia Anne Muldrow and the legendary DJ Romes. Together, the duo created a collection of high-energy, electronic, spiritual music that will resonate with you, literally. “fOnkie Journey” is the first taste: a deep, soaring track with an extended introduction focused around a rising synth line that finally drops into a bass line that is just dripping with fOnk.

Delivered via Mello Music Group, this is music to experience, not listen to. Georgia and Romes have found a cross section between house, disco and hip-hop, between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Tune into your melanin and blast off with Blackhouse!

This enigmatic Stones Throw artists is about to drop her new album, Seeds, which was produced by the equally riddlesome Madlib. You can stream the whole 11-track album after the jump. Be prepared for a hazy homage to ’70s black power that sounds almost vintage until you really listen closely and realize that Madlib’s back to front sample magic is all over every tune.
