Portishead To Record New Album

The world has given a lot of attention lately to Geoff Barrow’s various projects, including Drokk, BEAK> and his Invada record label. And he’s now ready to repay by giving us what it is we really want, new music by Portishead. Barrows told The Quietus that the group plans on recording a new record, although nothing is underway just yet.

“We’ve been getting together recently and talking about lots of stuff,” he said. “There’s definitely going to be another record, we’re just going to get on it as soon as my studio gets working.” …MORE

STREAM New Geoff Barrow of Portishead Music (MP3)

Portishead’s Geoff Barrow has some new tunes for us to hear. And while none of it is fresh music from his most famous band, the producer/DJ/drummer is offering up selections from his groups DROKK and BEAK> as part of a sample for his Invada record label. The two DROKK songs, “Exhale” and “Justice One,” are basically dark ambient piecesrecorded with Ben Sailsbury that were inspired by “Mega City One” (comic geek alert).

Other standouts on the compilation include Barrow’s remix of the rocking “The Haunting” by Scarlet Rascal & Train Wreck and Anika’s cover of Chromatic’s “In The City.” Check out the full 11-song sampler after the jump.

WATCH Portishead “Mysterons” & “Chase The Tear” On Fallon (Video)

Portishead are known for taking their sweet time. The Bristol trio’s third album, Third, was released in 2008, 11 years after their second, self-titled album. And unlike any other band we can think of after that long of a hiatus, it was as if they didn’t miss a beat.

Last night, the group appeared on Jimmy Fallon, following last week’s gig at ATP, which featured a guest spot by Chuck D. Fallon marks their first U.S. television appearance since 1998 on SNL. They were “promoting” their Amnesty International benefit single, “Chase The Tear,” which actually came back out in 2009.

Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley also dug out oldie but goodie “Mysterons” for a web-only exclusive. The song remains as timeless as …

HEAR Portishead Side-Project Beak> Cover Pink Floyd’s “Welcome To The Machine” (MP3)

For all the well-deserved fanfare that accompanies Portishead, it’s surprising that Geoff Barrow’s other trio, Beak>, seems to have mostly stayed under the radar. The group’s 2009 self-titled album was a lesson in live minimal synth/bass/drum alchemy, and this cover of Pink Floyd’s classic “Welcome To The Machine,” recorded for a Mojo Magazine sampler CD, delivers the same.
