Having trouble sleeping makes for opportune time for counting sheep and songwriting; just ask Judah Dadone of Brooklyn quintet Freelance Whales. Though the group met two years ago online, their debut, Weathervanes, materializes like a vision of a bygone time, with its patchwork of glockenspiel and banjo woven into chirpy songs.

How to cause a frenzy amongst the hipsters of Silver Lake? Get these guys to perform and watch the lines snake around Spaceland. It’s exactly what happened with this quintet had a redisency there back in August, and with the debut, Gorilla Manor, set to be released February 16th via Frenchkiss Records, we’ll be seeing them on the circuit… and at Coachella and SXSW. A proper tour is in the works. Until then, watch the video for “Airplanes,” which is about keyboardist Kelcey Ayer wanting to meet his pilot grandpa.
