Mia Doi Todd video dir. by Michel Gondry + classic Flying Lotus {remix} (Video)

As part of the quarterly Flux Screening Series showcasing innovative film and music, the Hammer will debut the World Premiere of Mia Doi Todd’s new video “Open Your Heart”, directed by Michel Gondry. The evening of shorts and videos will include videos for Grizzly Bear, Charlotte Gainsbourg & Beck, Ramona Falls among others. Filmmakers Michel Gondry, Keith Schofield, Allison Schulnik and Stefan Nadelman will be in attendance. The evening will conclude with a reception featuring a very special live performance by Mia Doi Todd herself!

ALL HAMMER PUBLIC PROGRAMS ARE FREE.

SATURN NEVER SLEEPS (Info + Interview)

Beat-zealot King Britt and his lady and vocal-tronic counterpart Rucyl came together earlier in the summer to create an enigmatic dedication to Sun Ra titled “Saturn Never Sleeps”. Using tripped-out visuals and atmospheric rhythms and effects, it evolved from a dedication to a regular party to promote ground-breaking sound and dynamic visual and audible euphoria all at once. In order to get the most engaging and pure perspective of the event, we took some time to chat with King Britt and Rucyl.

URB: How did the idea of Saturn Never Sleeps come about?

King: We were asked to curate a night coinciding with the Sun Ra exhibit at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philly.. So we did a night that took microedits of his music and created a whole new interpretation of his sound….and …

The idea of an indeterminate grey area between human and machine pervades every element of his debut, and so just as he's retrofitted his human name into a piece of equipment so he struggles throughout Death Star Droid to find humanity within his equipment. Flying Lotus Leaks New Songs, Lil Wayne Remix (MP3)

FlyLo has since been offering up via his MySpace a series of things just as one-of-a-kind, but able to be enjoyed by all, and for free. Over the past week, Ellison has posted five new unreleased tracks, and they’re pretty fuerte.

Low-key thumper “Data Entry,” the percussive “Prince,” trancey “Gripppit” and the sedate “Lullaby” all bear plenty of promise for what’s to come on the next FlyLo record, reportedly out early 2010, but best off all is dude’s mega-druggy take on Lil Wayne’s “I Feel Like Dying.”
