WTF is back with something that we hope that you didn’t miss on release day this week.

Being patient certainly paid off for those people awaiting, UK based producer, Stuart Howard aka Lapalux, to drop his debut LP, Nostalchic, on widely praised label Brainfeeder. Brainfeeder has garnered much respect in the music community as home to releases from such acts as Flying Lotus, Thundercat, and The Gaslamp Killer and has strengthened it’s label with its recent signing of Lapalux.

Despite Nostalchic‘s standing as his debut album, Lapalux’s 12 track release this Tuesday did so with a great head of steam. Fans of his music and ability to produce ‘slow-burn, atmospheric’ sample based synth-R&B were treated to practice sessions with the various EP’s and remixes that he’s dropped through the past few years. Nostalchic is Howard stepping into ‘big game’ mode. Despite his age of 25 years, there is a sense of cinematic focus through the album that lends itself to showing off a greater degree of maturity and genius with regards to his craft.

As a whole the album feels like a stripped back version of the layered and airy soundscapes of earlier compositions in his career, but that could be farther from the truth. There is a brilliance shown here in letting his aural textures breath, and despite the airiness and atmosphere contained with his production there is a clear focus on its intent and drive to tell a story and convey a spatial mood.

The reaction to this album with regards to it’s R&B specific vibe feels (to me) like describing what Def Jux was to hip hop back in 1999. Lapalux and his label peers have succeeded in planting a historical note of R&B’s next viable evolution, and that’s not a bad thing at all.

Consider this. We’ve played this album at least once a day since receiving our press copy weeks ago. Do yourself a favor, listen to the record and let the WTF hit you when you realize how good this LP really is.

This seven-person collective from the Twin Cities has been on our radar for almost a decade, although it seemed like they’d forever be in the shadow of MPLS patriarchy Rhymesayers. Not that there’s anything but healthy competition between the two camps. And now, riding on win after win as a team, plus all-star performances from individual players Lazerbeak and Dessa, Doomtree has cracked our year end list for the first time. Looks like Minnesota is still the hip-hop capital of the Midwest.

R.I.P. :: Brainfeeder Artist Austin Peralta

URB was deeply saddened over the weekend to learn that 22-year old Brainfeeder recording artist Austin Peralta, son of skateboarding legend and award-winning documentarian Stacey Peralta, passed away on Thanksgiving Day. The cause of his death is still unknown.

Peralta was a piano prodigy, releasing his first jazz album at the age of 16. He soon joined the ranks of Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label, releasing the album Endless Planets in 2011. He also appeared on records by label mates Flylo and Thundercat.

In 2011, URB interviewed Peralta for the Coachella CAMP magazine. You can read the interview after the jump.

Most producers dream of hearing their tunes played on a giant sound system. For Sam XL of Pure Filth Sound, the rig came first. The long time Los Angeles promoter-producer-DJ-sound guy has been working on creating the ultimate sound system for bass music since 2007, when he launched America’s first weekly dubstep event. That club and system soon helped to inspire LA Beat’s ground zero, Low End Theory and dubstep giants Smog. A collision of bass that would literally shake the dance music scene worldwide.

Sam then paired up with veteran musician David Harrow, whose resume includes work On-U Sound, Bjork, and even the godfather of dub, Lee Scratch Perry. With so much 60Hz sound in their collective blood, it’s no wonder the tunes by this duo, still carrying the Pure Filth name, would find favor with artists like Benga and Amon Tobin (for whom Sam did sound on his ISAM tour.) They just dropped their first album, Bass Moves Space, featuring guest like Kemst, Busdriver and new Brainfeeder artist, Ryat, and compiled this podcast of mainly unreleased version of tunes by Pure Filth Sound, Flying Lotus, Roots Manuva and more exclusively for URB.

When the next chapter in the history of electronic music is written, look for Los Angeles producer Flying Lotus to be featured on the first page. His visionary take on instrumental hip-hop has taken the world by storm, while his Brainfeeder label has sustained an entire new generation of producers—from Gaslamp Killer to Tokimonsta—who together make up what is known as the LA Beat sound. FlyLo’s fourth album, Until The Quiet Comes, drops next week on Warp Records (a name already written in many chapters of electronic music’s grand history). The album features some of the most significant players in modern music, including Erykah Badu and Thom Yorke. Flying Lotus‘ new album, Until the Quiet Comes drops in less than two weeks on Warp Records. And while he’s previously given us some snippets of music via the moody short film of the same name, we finally have a full clip for the song “Putty Boy Strut” to enjoy. The colorfully animated video matches the playful vibe of the track—two adjectives not often used to describe stuff coming from FlyLo camp.

We’re not going to bother trying to describe this haunting short-film directed by Kahil Joseph to accompany Flying Lotus’ upcoming album, Until The Quiet Comes. Suffice to say that the artist who did the most to define the “LA beat” offers a look at South LA that’s as new and compelling as the sound he helped develop. The four-minute clip features snippets of several tunes off the anticipated album that drops October 2nd on Warp Records.

Flying Lotus has been teasing us with word of a new album for some time. Heck, he delivered an all new live set back in April at Coachella, making us wonder when the heck the new record would finally drop. The beloved producer is finally firming some things up, including the album title (Until The Quiet Comes), artwork, tracklist, and a list of special guest including Erykah Badu, Laura Marling, Niki Randa, Thundercat, and Thom Yorke. He’s also announced a tour to support the new record which will be coming on Warp Records on October 2nd.

Kutmah Presents Worldwide Family Vol. 2 Interview

The second edition to Brownswood’s Worldwide Family compilation showcases tracks compiled by Kutmah, featuring music from Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke, Samiyam, fLako, Gaby Hernandez, Mono/Poly, Dibia$e, and many others. Kutmah was an integral part of the Los Angeles music community, but was deported back to the UK by Homeland Security. Jeff Weiss for the LA Weekly recently spoke to Kutmah about life after the US which you can check out here:

Today, enjoy a video interview with Kutmah, talking about life in Los Angeles and the process of compiling this compilation for Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings. The video was directed and edited by Mario Epsley & Tom Morgan and shot at Eldica Records in London.
