Kid Sister – Ultraviolet (Review)

Kid Sister

Ultraviolet

Released by Downtown Records/Universal Republic Records

Kid Sister has teased us over the last three years, giving us tastes of her cheeky and impeccable flow, spunky personality onstage, and hyper antics during interviews. The tracks that made the blog rounds two to three years ago, like “Control” and the Kanye-assisted “Pro Nails" had everyone dancing and curious to see what A-Trak’s lady could really do beyond making the rounds at Chicago hipster parties.

Interview: Cool Kids

If you haven’t been living under a rock for the past year or so, you are most likely aware of the Cool Kids. Concistently performing at Chicago clubs spots as special guests to Flosstradamus and others, the rapper duo steadily built a following and then hit it big when a handful of their songs made their way through the internets. Two years after thier powerful debut, the guys can be found standing at a bus stop in Wicker Park, Chicago’s watering hole for the hipster population. They are there filming a video for “Champion”, off their Gone Fishing mixtape (a collaborative effort with mixtape king Don Cannon). The bus stop is covered with Chicago regulars: director of most of the Cool Kids’ videos, GL Joe, noted photographer Clayton Hauck, …

U-N-I Land of the Kings (MP3)

LA hip-hop fashionista’s U-N-I are the latest too cool act to drop a free single on Green Label Sound, the digital label powered by a certain green and sticky substance (no, not the green and sticky). “Land of the Kings” is built on an unusually high-tempo beat—all quarter note snares and zero groove. That is until the Casio-esque breakdown. U-N-I do a great job riding the beat that would throw off most MCs of an older era.

GLS also announced their release schedule for the rest of 2009, which include high-profile acts like Chromeo as well as fast rising stars Amazing Baby, Holy Ghost! and Solid Gold.

Flosstradamus and Caroline Polachek :: Chicago-Brooklyn collab gets that green

“If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” seems to be the operative adage in Green Label Sound’s philosophy. In this modern age of file sharing and ADD-style consumption of music thanks to the almighty blogosphere, we live in a culture dominated and dictated by “the single” (this really goes without saying). As record companies and album sales feel the heat, Green Label got with the program; backed by Mountain Dew (yes, Mountain Dew), GLS showcases independent artists through releasing exclusive tracks for a free download. After the success of working with dance duo Matt and Kim and The Cool Kids, Flosstradamus got the fateful tap on the shoulder to release an original collaboration track, a first for both the label and the Chicago DJ duo.
