Daft Punk – Tron: Legacy Original Soundtrack (Preview)

Being a huge fan of the original TRON (1982), I grew skeptical when Disney announced they would be revisiting the world of TRON in an updated sequel reboot simply because I found the original film near perfect (plus, no one wants a formative filmic experience from childhood messed with). With an orchestral score by the legendary musician Wendy Carlos, the original film resonated with my budding technophilia at a critical moment in my childhood (I was about 7 years old when I first saw the film). The music became a critical part of what made the film particularly memorable, being intrinsically connected to the visual design of the movie. Disney, I thought, had crafted a beautiful and memorable picture, a beautiful example of the possibilities of the marriage between storytelling and technology.  1982’s TRON was a piece of art, a …

Kanye West’s “Runaway” (Review) (Video)

While the “critics” have been “lauding” the “visionary” effort by Kanye West in his directorial debut film that serves as an accompaniment to his upcoming new record, Runaway, the film, when treated as either a short or an extended music video—leaves much to be desired.  Being a decidedly arthouse film, Kanye West takes poetic license and shows us some of the twisted images coming from the mind of a self-named genius, a creative polymath capable of combining disparate elements like those exemplified by the cunning of a Picasso, the deconstruction of a Derrida, the creativity of a Warhol, or the glam avant-garde of David Bowie. Kanye is, at the moment, none of these (my apologies).

His music video/film hybrid reads like an incoherent montage of sequences with only the most basic of connections being made, through what seems to …

Sacha Baron Cohen Set to Play Freddie Mercury

It was just announced that Sacha Baron Cohen will be playing Freddie Mercury in an upcoming Queen film. Yes, Bruno/Ali G/ Borat will be Freddie Mercury one of the best performers of all time and frontman of Queen. The screenplay is being written by Oscar nominee Peter Morgan who also worked on The Queen and The Last King of Scotland and produced by Academy Award winner Graham King, so at least we have this film being treated right not just some Hollywood spit-up. According to some other articles the film will be set from the formation of the band up to Live Aid in ‘85 which was one of Queen’s major career highlights. I hope they get the rights to “Somebody to Love”! It is yet …

Chilly Gonzales: New Ivory Towers album, and film. (Interview)

Tracking him from Japan, Berlin, and to Canada. I finally got to have a quick phone interview with the hard working talent now under the name Chilly Gonzales. He is not just an incredible producer, and piano playing entertainer that ranked second popular “twitter trend” on the day he broke the Guinness world record for longest piano concert. No, he is more.  He is a humorus hip cat that focused his attention on the minutiae of his musical and writing craft to develop his own approach to making a film. Watch the trailer for a glimpse at Gonzales’ version of a sports parody.

“We were doing some Robert Di Nero shet!” – Chilly Gonzales

During our conversation I got to listen to Chilly Gonzales speak on his new music inspiring the film, thoughts of purists, hiring his friends, and how his unprofessional-ism is like a beautiful woman with a yellow stain on her front tooth. All the details are in the interview so read on. …MORE
