LCD Soundsystem: Shut Up And Play The Review (Video)

The LCD Soundsystem documentary opens with the quote, “If it’s a funeral, let’s have the best funeral ever.”

While it’s a great metaphor for their final show at Madison Square Garden, don’t go into the film expecting a procession of nostalgia. Anchored around live footage and supplemented by a heady Chuck Klosterman interview, brief windows into Murphy’s daily routine, and behind-the-scenes set-up/tear-down of the Garden, the most poignant feature of SUAPTH is that it refuses to dwell on the past.

Daft Punk – Tron: Legacy Original Soundtrack (Preview)

Being a huge fan of the original TRON (1982), I grew skeptical when Disney announced they would be revisiting the world of TRON in an updated sequel reboot simply because I found the original film near perfect (plus, no one wants a formative filmic experience from childhood messed with). With an orchestral score by the legendary musician Wendy Carlos, the original film resonated with my budding technophilia at a critical moment in my childhood (I was about 7 years old when I first saw the film). The music became a critical part of what made the film particularly memorable, being intrinsically connected to the visual design of the movie. Disney, I thought, had crafted a beautiful and memorable picture, a beautiful example of the possibilities of the marriage between storytelling and technology.  1982’s TRON was a piece of art, a …

Kanye West’s “Runaway” (Review) (Video)

While the “critics” have been “lauding” the “visionary” effort by Kanye West in his directorial debut film that serves as an accompaniment to his upcoming new record, Runaway, the film, when treated as either a short or an extended music video—leaves much to be desired.  Being a decidedly arthouse film, Kanye West takes poetic license and shows us some of the twisted images coming from the mind of a self-named genius, a creative polymath capable of combining disparate elements like those exemplified by the cunning of a Picasso, the deconstruction of a Derrida, the creativity of a Warhol, or the glam avant-garde of David Bowie. Kanye is, at the moment, none of these (my apologies).

His music video/film hybrid reads like an incoherent montage of sequences with only the most basic of connections being made, through what seems to …
