URB Premiere: Paranoid Castle (Kirby Dominant + Factor) – “Orca” (Video)

Stuey Kubrick, the same director who made Factor & Ceschi’s “The Fall of Captain E.O.” and Common Grackle’s “The Great Depression” swell like a ribcage out of breath is back with more Fake Four cinema. The sonic backdrop this go around is “Orca,” the absorbing lead single from Paranoid Castle’s new record Champagne Nightmares. The group, which consists of the Bay Area’s Kirby Dominant on the mic and Saskatoon’s Factor on the boards, has matured into a well-oiled machine with the release of their pensive yet playful sophomore album. When Kirby’s not busy channeling his inner Shawne Merriman and dousing young women with bubbly, he displays one of the most distinct sing-songy flows in the indie rap world which meshes superbly with Factor’s melodic instincts. Champagne Nightmares is out now via Fake Four Inc.

Much like Tom Waits before them, the indie rap collective better known as Fake Four, Inc. is big in Japan. The result is a four track EP featuring impassioned narratives and beats from the likes of Sole, Myka9, Ceschi, Awol One, Moka Only, Factor, Jared Paul, Radical Face, Leif Kolt, Gregory Pepper and greencarpetedstairs. Eight bucks gets you the J-A-P-A-N EP with all proceeds benefiting Relief International’s efforts to help survivors in Japan. Great music for a great cause.

Ceschi @ Soda Bar (Live Review)

The grimaces naturally unfurling upon the face of Ceschi as he violently plucks his acoustic guitar are the marks of an artist who feels every note of the music in his bones. Whether railing against Catholic hypocrisy (“Black And White And Red All Over”), dissecting suicide (“Bad Jokes”) or battling his own heartache (“Calluses”), the New Haven-based folk-hop musician leaves a piece of himself on the stage every night.

In addition to a busy lineup of Fake Four mainstays such as Awol One, Factor and Cars & Trains, the Soda Bar was lucky enough to catch Ceschi alongside his band Anonymous Inc. The progressive drumming of Ceschi’s younger brother David Ramos, subtle yet crucial keyboard work of Max Heath and requisite crowd-hyping from iCON the Mic King all played their part in illuminating Ceschi’s confessional catalogue. …MORE

Video Premiere: Sole & the Skyrider Band – “Mr. Insurgent” (Factor Remix) (Video & MP3)

The brilliant Canadian beatsmith Factor lends his talents to this remix of “Mr. Insurgent” off of Sole & the Skyrider Band’s Plastique. Sole, who recently put out the fifth installment in his mansbestfriend series, has also released a video for the track (directed by Wesley Charles Tank) which features footage from the Wisconsin anti union busting protests of last month. A free download of the Factor remix is available here. The third full-length from SSRB drops later this year on Fake Four Inc.

Common Grackle – The Great Depression (Review)

Common Grackle

The Great Depression

Released by Fake Four Inc.

Gregory Pepper writes quirky songs centered on human suffering with frayed edges of humor and wit. “The Great Depression” and “Big Marquee” are beautifully-composed odes to sorrow with clever one-liners like “I used to pull pins out of hand grenades / then I extracted lemons out of lemonade” on full display. Clocking in at just over 31 minutes, Canadian duo Common Grackle’s The Great Depression is a concise, cynical meditation on melancholy. It’s a heavy record, but not without moments of comedic relief such as “At The Grindcore Show.” Pepper uses the track to play weary sociological observer as he croons “They all look like body doubles from that shitty film The Crow / now I don’t wanna die at the grindcore show.”
