  • Chuck Brown & The Souls Searchers’ “Bustin’ Loose” vs. The Zombies’ “Time of the Season” (DJ Shadow Mix)

Above & Beyond – Going Deeper with US Tour

Next 100 Alum Above & Beyond – Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness and Paavo Slijamaki – continue to raise the bar on trance, tech-house and deep progressive. These past five years, they have consistently maintained a strong global presence, pushing the boundaries of a genre that, despite being considered corny or cheesy here in the United States, is still the most popular in dance music.

The group created the Anjunadeep sub-label to cover a variety of sounds that don’ t necessarily fit into the trance category. These singles have gained momentum and are being touted by a variety of DJs, including Laurent Garnier, Eric Prydz and James Zabiela, who recently stated, ‘Last night I played four Anjunadeep tracks. I can’t think of any label where I’ve done that.’ Anjunadeep received a nomination for ‘Best Record Label’ at DJ Magazine’ …

DJ Riz’s Top 10 Party-Starters

We wanted to give a sincere congrats to New York’s Crooklyn Clan for surviving 15 years in the game. In ’93, DJ Riz and DJ Sizzahandz released their first single on Nervous Records and a year later, blew up New York with “Be Faithful” a track still heard at virtually every social event imaginable. (See below.) In addition to gigging around the world, producing, and running the remixing service The Vault, DJ Riz is the official DJ for the NFL. We tapped his brain to get his Top 10 party-starting anthems.

“I like to listen to songs with different energy, some are up-tempo, some are feel-good songs, and some just classics I grew up with. I could probably …

Jason Bentley + ULTRA =

As you May know, this legendary DJ, whose hustle never ends, is an URB OG, having served crucially as this mag's first managing editor.

His then-nascent radio show on KCRW in the early 90's gave DJs like Paul Van Dyke and Giles Peterson their first US airtime, years before they became global superstars. I've seen him hustle equally hard playing to near-empty rooms as well as full-on massives ('always remember his set at Organic '96) and he's the kinda cat that can do underwater drum and bass as easily as heart-tugging house, with a good dose of rave history and whatever else in between.

I remember hearing him play Donovan alongside The Orb while also my handling request for “Cosmic Slop” during his earliest days on KCRW. His sets back then turned me on to …

Paul Van Dyk live in Central Park (review)

Paul Van Dyk, considered by many to be the number one DJ in the world, returned to New York City this past Aug 17th and 18th for two incredible sold-out performances that marked the fifth straight year that over 10,000 club music aficionados have descended on Central Park’s Rumsey Playfield to frolic in his beats. Impeccably designed, produced and promoted by New York’s MADE Events, this rock concert-like experience was a lavish, over-the-top outdoor soiree’ that will quite possibly become the single best nightclub event of the year…and perhaps EVER. The irony being this was outdoors, not in a club, and scheduled to begin in the early evening, not in the middle …
