Gomma record founder Mathias Modica has a new album, The Birds and the Beats, under his prefered production alias, Munk. This exclusive mix features three cuts from the album, along with a whole bunch of remixes and remixers, including Ellen Allien, Lovefoxx of CSS, Etienne de Crecy and Yeasayer.
Over the last decade or so, Ellen Allien has become one of the most beloved and admired artists on the electronic music scene. In addition to recording, producing and playing all over the world as a DJ and performer, Allien has also been running Bpitch Control, (the record label she founded in 1999) and a namesake fashion line of casual, color-splashed active wear. She has often credited her enduring success to her family-minded attitude. This approach has resulted in her signing some of the most influential names in dance music and Berlin’s particularly tenacious DJ zeitgeist – Sasha Funk, Modeselektor, Apparat among them. Most recently, BPitch added trip-hop trio Jahcoozi, expressing an unmistakable desire to expand the label’s reach. Lucky for Allien, what she likes usually sells, even in these file-sharing times. Her new album is called Dust, which seems earthy enough until you notice the glamorous cover – a close up of Ellen, eyes closed serenely. She looks like a million-dollar muse sprinkled in silver. We rang her up in Berlin to talk about Dust, ghosts, drugs, how politics is personal and the perils of doing too much yoga.
Has it really been over half a decade since Ellen Allien appeared on the cover of URB with fellow Berliners Richie Hawtin and Miss Kittin? Besides making me feel old (I could never again fly from LA to NYC to Berlin and back in 72 hours, without sleeping, just to get a story—ok, maybe…) this new clip from Ellen is a reminder of exactly why we were so psyched on her back then, and why we still perk up when news of a new Ellen Allien record comes our way. Although frustratingly short, “Our Eutopie” is a great example of the minimal techno-pop that has always been Allien’s specialty on wax. The new album, Dust, comes forth next week.

Boogybytes Vol. 05
The weather stayed idyllic, the sounds stayed loud and the crowds who stuck around for the final day of Movement 2009 were treated to massive sets from Detroit’s techno legends, those who took influence from them and someone they looked back to for inspiration.
Flying Lotus
Things started early in the afternoon with glitchy beatmaker Flying Lotus bouncing on stage in a J Dilla T-shirt to the thunderous beats he was pulling from his laptop. The crowd showed plenty of bounce too, but FlyLo seemed to be enjoying himself as much as anyone at that stage. The laid back and loosely arranged set touched on everything breakbeat, showcased a few of his newest tracks and concluded with an impromptu chopping of session of hardcore jungle breaks.
