French Follies: Oizo Bumped, Electroma clipped

Friday night in Chicago didn’t go down completely as planned. Before even setting foot in the club the word was on the street that there would be no Mr. Oizo. DJ/Promoter Zebo explained the French DJ’s flight was overbooked, he was bumped and other flight cancellations kept him from making it to Chicago in time for the show.

Current plans call for Mr. Oizo to attempt the trip again in Sep. The show will be at Metro again with a related line up playing downstairs in Smartbar.

Of course the screening of Daft Punk’s Electroma was still happening. Unfortunately it too was a logistical victim, suffering from unsynched sound, fuzzy focus and, worst of all, the film was projected onto a square screen which left a good five or six feet of footage lost into the curtain on each …

Graf + Homeland Security =

I’ve been into graffiti ever since I discovered the book Subway Art. In the early eighties, kids were rushing out to buy the book, everybody was talking about graffiti, and soon enough people were painting graffiti in Birmingham, UK, the town where I was born and raised.

I came from a Muslim background. My parents migrated from Bangladesh to the UK in the 60’s. I knew nothing of Bangladesh, all I knew were the streets of England. However I was raised as a Muslim. My upbringing wasn’t particularly strict, but we were taught to be mindful of the faith and have respect for it. And who wants to be frozen into something that's worth a thousand words when the first two are “beat up”? Blonde Redhead's Kuzo Makino is gorgeous regardless of the elements, but she wasn't trying to pose for a photo before their night set on day two. She did talk to us though, and this is how it went:

Graffiti Documentary Trailer

It's got all the elements of your classic graf story: dedicated writers, a clued-out bureaucrat hell-bent on stoppin' em, a well-meaning adult who helps 'em make the transition from “writer” to “artist” as they face the pressures of gettin up, crossing over and gettin' paid…and it's true! Or, as the filmmakers put it:

Follow the lives of 4 graffiti artists in Los Angeles as they evolve from street tags to graffiti bombing to canvas art to gallery showings. The artists come from different backgrounds, paint the same walls, and move on to jail, art school, and beyond as the culture clash of art versus vandalism meets them head on. Join the young artists as they struggle to reach beyond the gangster-thug perceptions, and become artists in their own right, giving the world their piece of mind.

Enough …
