DEMF 07 Lineup

As always Memorial Day weekend will be marked by techno madness in the music's hometown of Detroit. Production crew Paxahau just released the preliminary lineup for Movement 2007 Detroit's Electronic Music Festival , and as always, the weekend looks to be stuff with great music.

The 07 fest takes place once again in Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit May 26-28. Paxahau has yet to announce the number of stages but there's usually at least four providing music daily from noon til midnight with all night afterhours parties popping in clubs, hotels, bars, restaurants, abandoned buildings and just about everywhere else around town.

Here's the lineup thus far with a few comments:

A Guy Called Gerald – live
Abe Duque & Blake Baxter – live

SWITCH at The Manhattan Room, Philadelphia 2/11/07

photos by Jon Gill and Enne, words by Jon Gill

Anyone who throws a party in the month of Feb in the city Philadelphia runs the risks of poor weather for their event. That's why party hosts, From Philly With Love, were so excited they got the high temperature of the week: 34 degrees. Deep in the heart of north Philly, only one block east of the city's largest elevated train station, a small night spot called The Manhattan Room opened it's doors on this cold Sunday night to electronic music enthusiasts. Entering the club, you got your first taste of Philly love as you are greeted graciously by party host for the evening and F.P.W.L member, Lorne.

Album of the Week – Kassin +2

Every week, we highlight an album that slipped through the cracks that we think deserves some shine. This week, check out Kassin +2: Futurismo, the last album of a trilogy made by a modern-day Brazilian supergroup.

Kassin +2

Futurismo (Luaka Bop)

Luaka Bop Records has consistently been on the forefront of world music releases (Check out the stellar World Psychedelic Classics series or Os Mutantes Best Of for proof). Now, with parent company V2 no longer poppin' out new releases, hopefully this album, which depending on where you live was either released last year or not at all, will see worldwide distribution shortly.

The album is the last of a trilogy of records led by Brazilian musicians Kassin, Moreno Veloso (Caetano's son!) and Domenico Lancelotti, beginning with 2000's Music Typewriter (Moreno +2) and …

Crossing Guards Hate Steve Jobs

New Yorkers and their damn iPods. In a certainly sensible suggestion, but an iffy law proposal, New York state senator Carl Kruger has introduced legislation banning the use of electronic objects by pedestrians at crosswalks. According to CNN.com, Kruger claims that three people in his Brooklyn district have been killed by their own aloofness—or the rockin' theatrics of Of Montreal, probably—while employing an iPod and walking. No doubt that if this passes in New York, similar metropolitan areas will follow suit.

Remember Lamb?

After ten years together, Andy Barlow and Lou Rhodes amicabaly split up Lamb in 2004, thus sounding the death throes of quality trip-hop for all future generations. Truly sad. Over the past few years, though, different members have quietly released solo projects that should whet the appetites of lunatic Lamb fans like myself. (Holla!)

Vocalist Lou Rhodes started her own label, Infinite Bloom, to release her first solo album in '06. Beloved One is full-on acoustic folk music. (Think hand drums, not 808's.) Her pipes are still incredible and she's still got that peerless range, but gone are all the electronic bells and whistles. You can hear tracks on her Myspace page here. Former Lamb guitarist Oddur Runnarson is also releasing an EP of material on her label.
