Junior Boys – It’s All True (Review)

Junior Boys

It's All True

Released by Domino

On their recent releases, the electro-pop put forth by Junior Boys was excellently refined and intimate in composition and production. Jeremy Greenspan’s lyrics certainly put his emotions out in the open, and he and bandmate Matthew Didemus constructed the songs that excelled in their polished restraint. Yet it came with a detached air, almost as if the honed electronic sounds and the spirit of the music were being presented from behind a screen. All the same basic elements—classic synth leads, intricately pulsing rhythms and pop vocal stylings—are back again ...

Chucha Santamaria Y Usted – Bright Young Light Pt. 2 (MP3) (MP3)

This soon to wed duo of Sofía Córdova and Matthew Kirkland bring a latin accent to the electro pop on their self-titled debut set for release in two weeks on Austin’s Young Cubs label. They’ve got plenty of energetic and aggressive beats and lyrics in store, but ahead of that release, Chucha Santamaria Y Usted are offering the track “Bright Young Light Pt. 2″ as a sample. It’s gliding intensity is descriptive of the album, but the track is mostly an example of Córdova and Kirkland at their most restrained.

FM Belfast – How To Make Friends (Review)

FM Belfast

How To Make Friends

Released by World Champion Records

FM Belfast is an Icelandic electro-pop group that was founded in 2005. How to Make Friends is their debut album, originally released in 2008. After being one of the most talked-about bands all over Europe, due in no small part to their energetic and engaging live show, Reykjavik's FM Belfast are set to release their debut album in the US. They became a must-see band at SXSW '09. The size of the group varies from performance to performance, with anywhere from three to eight members comprising FM Belfast at any given time, and includes Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason of the experimental electronic group múm. They play non conventional electro-indie-pop, and you can hear shadows of LCD Soundsystem, Munk and Scissor Sisters, but there aren’t too many dance floor tracks.

Ninca Leece – There is No One Else When I Lay Down and Dream (Review)

Ninca Leece

There Is No One Else Around When I Lay Down And Dream

Released by Bureau B

Ninca Leece writes, plays, records and produces her own material. It’s electro-pop with deep, throbbing bass, and the French artist flirts with minimal house and glitchy beats on her debut, There is No One Else When I Lay Down and Dream. But with the naive and simple lyrics, it almost sounds like a cheap Euro version of Dani Siciliano. She lists early New Order and My Bloody Valentine as inspirations, but her own vocals are very light-weight.
