Best of ‘09 : A Soul Centric Review (URB writer David Ma)

The best part of what I do is all the music I get to listen to; the worst part is all the music I have to listen to.  And yes, there were plentiful letdowns this year.   Sure, you have your Phoenix, your Jay-Z, your Yeah Yeah Yeahs, your Gaga– all huge artists whose work was really really solid.  But they, and a few more, were largely in the minority in ‘09.

Besides all the boring,  trend-chasing releases, there were moments of triumph and originality.  These projects, perhaps niche or weird, do show that smarts and musicianship can still prove successful.  These artists lacked MTV airplay, features in Rolling Stone, and major radio support, but  the actual music, unlike this year’s trite hits, will likely age well in the coming years.

As I sink deeper in age (and curmudgeonism), I find myself sucker-punched by music with one commonality: Soul.  Heartfelt songs that get you in the gut can’t be denied.  Here are solid releases that, for one reason or for many, struck me hard in ‘09.   …MORE

New Edan Project : Echo Party!

It’s been a minute, but your favorite oddball-psychadelic-hip-hop-nerd-MC-producer-DJ extraordinaire returns!

Edan was given full access to Traffic Entertainment’s back catalogue, meaning he had a treasure chest of old-school vinyl to pick from.  What was gonna be a simple mixtape turned into Echo Party— a 30 minute opus replete with studio tricks, turntablism, tape echo, moog, guitar, and even kazoo.  Featuring old-school rap, punk and dance, Echo Party is dense, wierd, and most of all, REALLY ORIGINAL and REALLY FUN!

This comes out next week on CD and LP.  The CD comes with a book detailing every miniscule technique used; The vinyl (limited 1000 press) boasts Edan hand-drawing each cover.  This comes out next week, pre-order it now. They’re almost gone!

A-Trak x Dust La Rock x Kid Robot Grateful Bear Vinyl

We had to stop with the vinyl toys after our various wives, girlfriends and pets kepts trashing, hiding, eating them. But this new character from Kid Robot should get a pass. A-Trak’s frozen pal gets the full swag treatment from artist Dust la Rock, including a gold-plated necklace, leather cuff, cotton sweatband, snow-capped igloo, fitted baseball hat, and wayfarers. If we can score one of the 500, it’s going on display right next to our Interstella 5555 action figure set. Up high, where no one can mess with it.
