Detroit techno veteran Carl Craig paired up with drum machine innovator Roger Linn (of the infamous ’80s Linn Drum) to discuss the history of the drum machine at Decibel Festival in Seattle. Linn starts by showing off the history of electronic percussion dating back to the 1930s before Craig starts inquiring about the evolution of Linn’s own decade-defining beat machine.

Advice For Opening DJs From Josh Wink, DJ Dan, Shiftee and More

We’ve all been there, walking into the club only to be confronted with an opening DJ pounding out the biggest peaktime tunes to a sparse crowd of early arrivals who are more concerned with checking their coat and grabbing a drink than sweating it out on the dance floor. It’s the first no-no of the warm-up DJ set, and is repeated by all of the star jocks—including Josh Wink, Hector Romero, Mike Huckaby and DJ Dan—in a recent blog post by NYC DJ school Dubspot. Other tips include making room for the next DJ in the booth, not dropping the headliners biggest hit right before he goes on (duh) and packing something “throwback or silly” which according to DJ Shiftee will make your set memorable without messing with the vibe of the whole evening.

Mary Anne Hobbs graces URB once again with the final entry to her incredible Road Warrior Tour Diary. It’s been a sleepless adventure across the US and beyond, but of course, when you’re playing gigs like Francois K’s Deep Space in New York City, or King Britt and Rucyl’s Saturn Never Sleeps, you tend to keep going no matter how much sleep you’ve lost. Along with those East Coast stops, Mary Anne hits up Canada with some hard-pressed Canadian customs drama. At least she played a great gig with the always-awesome XI.
