Astrobal – Poetry & Science-Fiction (MP3)

New Plug Research Signee, French producer/musician Astrobal, is releasing his EP Poetry & Science-Fiction today. “He reminds us of the feeling we had when we signed Dntel,” says label owner, Allen Avanessian. Borrowing influences from Francois Truffaut and Phillip Dick, Astrobal’s new project is a “mix between fiction and true reality, between space and everyday life, relationship and imagination.”

Growing up in France, Astrobal (aka Emanuel Mario) was surrounded by sounds ranging from Neil Young to Kraftwerk. As a young, budding musician, Emanuel’s music landed in the hands of Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab. Laetitia fell in love with Emanuel’s whispered vocals and hazy synthesizers and soon the two began working together on compositions. Emanuel, now equipped with a new level of confidence, decided to focus on his own writing and Poetry & Science-Fiction was …

And for any 70 year old to compile and upload all of this music is impressive.

Early Works For Me If It Works For You II

I should preface this review by saying that you have to really be into some hardcore dark ambient shit in order to truly appreciate Dntel's music. If not, taking in this expansive 3 disc set may be a little hard to stomach. The album is more of a Dntel anthology than anything else. The first disc is a re-mastered version of his demo EP, Something Always Goes Wrong, which was originally passed up for a record deal in the early 90s before finally being released in 2000. Dntel pumps out free track

Jimmy Tamborello keeps plenty busy releasing albums as Dntel, James Figurine and of course as the bleepy half of The Postal Service. Somehow with all that work he’s got going, there’s still plenty of leftovers, and he wants to give them away to you via his Web site.

In a news post he promises to try to add one unfinished or unreleased track each month, starting with an unused instrumental from the making of his most recent album Dumb Luck. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but at this price who’s complaining.

Snag the free track here and read the full message from Mr. Tamborello below.
