DJ Babu – The Beat Tape, Vol. 2 (Review)

DJ Babu

The Beat Tape, Vol. 2

Released by Dilated Junkie

DJ Babu, of the world famous Beat Junkies and turntablist-mastermind behind the Dilated Peoples’ headnodding work, is at it again in a follow-up to his 2007 instrumental The Beat Tape Vol. 1 with the aptly named record: The Beat Tape Vol. 2. With his already impressive discography and genre-defining work on Super Duck Breaks (1996), Super Duper Duck Breaks (2000), and the Duck Season series, DJ Babu is no newcomer to the beatmaking game. A pioneer in his own right, DJ Babu has been a prominent name in hip-hop since his introduction to the culture and has contributed vast amounts of innovation through his innovative and creative musical efforts. The Beat Tape Vol. 2, like its predecessor, is an album of short one-to-three-minute instrumental beats that showcase the versatility of DJ Babu’s abilities on the wheels of steel. His work has continually evolved, providing the soundscapes to the ever-changing world of hip-hop music. On The Beat Tape Vol. 2, DJ Babu comes correct with a dark and ominous flavor, a textured, layered, and intricately composed selection of satisfying compositions.  Installments such as “Manferd,” and “What R U Doing,” are two of the tracks that reveal a subterranean coolness rarely found in hip-hop these days.

Review: Red Bull Thre3Style in Los Angeles + Interviews with Winner Morse Code, and DJ Mix Master Mike. (Video)

The venue was hot, the drinks were strong, but some Djs didn’t play my song. The Red Bull Thre3Style is a competition to find the world’s most party hyping’ DJ. The main focus is to crown the DJ that has mastered the drop, scratch, and fade spinning that keeps a party going into the early morning. While some Djs were playing tracks more suited for a lounge atmosphere, others definitely came to compete by the timing of lyrics like “Get your dam hands up,” and “Turn my music High.” I arrived to a packed Playhouse in Hollywood last Wednesday listening to “We love L.A” getting spun into a battle mix. The Red Bull Thre3Style in Los Angeles was live and popping.

Factor – 13 Stories (Review)

Factor

13 Stories

Released by Side Road Records

Collaborations with Myka9 and Awol One may have opened doors for Factor, but he remains true to his humble roots producing for oddball regional rappers around Saskatoon, Canada. He hooks up with some of these old friends on 13 Stories, his 13-track compilation comprised of emcees telling their own stories in their own styles, and held together by his smooth production. The melancholic and mellow soul that makes up the last two-thirds of the album is dominated by tracks like Nolto's tale of a tormented child evolving into a tormenting killer on the slightly uptempo “Pulling the Wings Off Angels” or the alternative stress relief of Def3's “Luck Ducks.” The front half of the album holds the hard funky grooves, like opening track “Sounds Good to Me (Hip Hop),” an organ-heavy roller-rink anthem to hip hop that features Ellay Khule, Medusa (haven't heard enough from her recently!) and Joe Dub, who absolutely kills it with his hip hop history lesson.

Prefuse 73 + The Gaslamp Killer Bring The Ruckus To Middle East Club

Guillermo Scott Herren has a lock on the rolling beats and sinewy electronic grooves he’s perfected through a career that spans more albums and side projects than there are backpacks at one of his shows. He’s one of the best known names of the glitch-hop movement, which encompasses everyone from Ghostly International’s scratchy rootmaster, Dabrye, to Herren’s own Eastern Developments protege, Elliot Lipp. On January 20 Herren rolled into the Middle East downstairs under his most famous (and my personal favorite) moniker, Prefuse73.
