Qbert Is “America’s Best DJ”

In a surprising bit of news, DJ Times and Pioneer DJ announced today that the winner of their annual fan-voted America’s Best DJ contest is none other than turntablist legend DJ Qbert. Surprising because, while it goes without question that  the member of the SF crew Invisibl Skratch Piklz isn’t one of the finest turntable technicians to ever cue up a record, his recent profile as a performer has been somewhat low-key, especially when compared to 2009 winner Z-Trip and 2008 champ Paul Oakenfold. The contest took some serious flack this year when it included Jersey Shore star DJ Pauly D in it’s list of 100 nominees, a move that many viewed as a cynical move by the contest organizers to draw more mainstream appeal. Electro Wars Premiers In LA Tonight

No, it’s not a film about Afrika Babaataa challenging Steve Aoki to a cage match over rights to the genre name—but this film by new director Stephen Vazquez captures the blog-house era of the mid-to-late-’00s by interviewing just about every DJ you’ve cared about during that time—A-Trak, Steve Aoki, Crookers, Dave-1, Spank Rock, Ninja Sonik, Moby, Justice, Armand Van Helden, DJ Premier, DJ Qbert, N.A.S.A, Boys Noize.

People taking the initiative is always welcome in a time where being bland leads to being cool. So, when someone puts out a product on a culture that’s in a creative limbo, we get to see its ups, downs, and all-arounds. With The Electro Wars, director and creatvor Stephen Vasquez wanted to capture the essence that is electro culture–from the skimpy skirts to the tightest jeans and the most distorted sounds humanly possible to manipulate. With an upcoming screening during the 2010 Winter Music Conference in Miami, Stephen took time to elaborate on his film and his origins of being a electro “warrior.”
