Matt Cutler is a producer that comes too few and far between. From starting his music career with the vastly underrated project Kids In Tracksuits, Cutler was always on the otherworldly hip-hop tip, finding ways to exploit beats into tasty audible pretzel knots. When he took on the moniker of Lone, he twisted the knots even further and threw lush synth sounds to create audible journeys into an ethereal utopia clouded by the selective samples used in his tracks. However, since he’s always making tons of these fantastic tunes, he rarely has time to do a full-fledged interview. Luckily, we got a hold of Lone at the right time: right after his stellar album Ecstasy & Friends came out, and he gave us details on his musical uprooting, his tune-making process and his favorite artists at the moment. I had the pleasure of seeing Alchemist DJ @ DJ AM’s tribute concert @ the Nike Theater last week, and needless to say I was blown away by his Dj set, headliner Dj Premier, and not to mention Dj Homicide, & Ben Baller who I’ve never even seen DJ! So much talent was there that night, it was unbelievable. It was for a great cause; the Belvedere was plentiful and I got to enjoy burning indoors with staff that wish to remain anonymous. Although, I did see and will show love to Kev Brown, WC, Krondon, Oh No, and MED, just to name a handful of the many artists that were in attendance. I got it in… and everyone only had good things to say about AM, NIKE, Los Angeles in general.

No, AM didn’t come back from beyond, but he was honored at the release of Nike’s DJ Premier Air Force 1/DJ AM Dunk pack. The set comes with both pairs of shoes, repping East Coast and West Coast DJs, and comes with custom labeled Serato Records. Kellen was there and caught the celebration on video, speaking with Primo, DJ Clark Kent and Ed Lover.
Fashawn doesn’t have much to prove when it comes to mic skills. But he took a huge leap when he decided to hop on this classic DJ Premier beat off of Illmatic. Some of you may frown on his take on the song considering it’s one of the best tracks from Nas’s magnum opus. I think he did an admirable job although he played Nas’s flow on it too closely. I’m sure that was his intention. With that said I would’ve loved to hear him make the song his own as he’s capable of doing so. Anyway, it’s a solid effort for the Fresno MC so it’s worth taking a look.
