Following mixes from Maya Jane Coles and Photek, next in the strong streak of this year’s DJ-Kicks mixes is Digitalism. The mix, coming July 10, strings together different aspects of Digitalism’s “sonic universe” that has shaped their journey as DJs so far. The mix spans a wide range, from Tomas Barfod to Vitalic. It also has no less than five new tracks from the duo as well as new edits and remixes, one of which you can download here today. It’s a hard-hitting electro-tinged banger called “A New Drug,” you can click here to download. Follow the jump to see the full tracklisting of what Digitalism has in store for their DJ-Kicks mix.
Sadly, this new tune by Digitalism isn’t a cover of Huey Lewis’ greatest hit—despite the matching lyric “I want a new drug.” The tune is an exclusive new cut taken from the duo’s upcoming DJ Kicks mix CD. The tune is one of six never before heard Digitalism originals and two brand new remixes on the compilation, which will also include tracks from Optimo, Alex Gopher, WhoMadeWho, Vitalic and The Rapture. As the beginning of SXSW’s music portion inches nearer and nearer, more stacked party lineups are being released by the day. The latest exciting announcement is a free party being held to help celebrate !K7’s twenty-seventh year as a label. Two of the recent stars of the prestigious DJ-Kicks series, Apparat and Photek, are set to headline the party, which will take place at Kingdom (103 E. St, Suite B, Austin) on March the 14th. Apparat’s DJ-Kicks mix is available now, and Photek’s is forthcoming on April 3rd, followed by Maya Jane Coles’ to be released on the 17th. For full party details, check the official Facebook event.
The party will also have sets performed by “several of the artists featured in the Photek mix.” To peep the tracklisting for clues, follow the jump:
Hot off the heels of the announcement of Photek mixing the year’s first installment of DJ-Kicks (due to drop on April 3rd) comes the news of Maya Jane Coles recording the succeeding mix. The 22-track mix is Coles’ first-ever commercially available DJ mix, due out sometime in April. The mix, to be released on !K7 Records, showcases more variety and versatility than what we’ve previously heard from the reigning queen of house music. Coles says “My album, which I’m working on at the moment, has moved completely away from house music. I suppose, in a way, this mix is preparing people for what they are going to hear next from me. My music will continue to get more diverse.” Follow the jump for album art & full tracklisting:
In his two decades-long career, Photek has shaken every branch of the bass-heavy tree, from his early jungle tunes and classic minimalist drum & bass to dalliances with acid house and more recent experimentations with Burning Man-flavored “bass music,” he always seems to hit right at the heart of whatever is happening in contemporary subwoofers.
Photek has been selected to mix the latest in the long-running DJ Kicks series, and like the 39 previous kickers, who range from Carl Craig and Thievery Corporation to Kode9 and Hot Chip, he offers up an original track to go with his selections. “Fountainhead” is a collaboration with dubsteppers Kuru, and while it’s hardly surprising to see Photek move in this direction, it’s equally impressive to hear how much the style-du-jour sounds like his most prolific ’90s d&b work.
