I hit the wall yesterday. This whole SXSW thing can run you down.
The group’s first gig was a DJ set with Kingdom and L-Vis 1990 back at Silhouette. A small crowd got in to the mid day acid house set the masses filed in for the day.
I landed in the Levi’s Fader Fort to meet Keys N Krates and catch The Very Best. The set was excellent, and then I fell in love with Marina and the Diamonds. Well, more so Marina than the Diamonds….

Ah yes a punchline from DOOM’s “Batty Boyz,” one that seemed like a subliminal dis of one of New York’s darling hipster DJs. While The Rub is something of a legendary party in the Northeast USA, the crowd that it attracts always seemed to be on the neophyte side perhaps in part to the mash-up formatting the aforementioned DJ sponsors (a format clearly co-opted from Philadelphia’s now-defunct Hollertronix crew, helmed by none other than Diplo). No disrespect at all to Chicago’s GLC but this track is an utter snoozefest and perhaps an example of a DJ getting gassed up off his own press clippings. So, when someone puts out a product on a culture that’s in a creative limbo, we get to see its ups, downs, and all-arounds. With The Electro Wars, director and creatvor Stephen Vasquez wanted to capture the essence that is electro culture–from the skimpy skirts to the tightest jeans and the most distorted sounds humanly possible to manipulate. With an upcoming screening during the 2010 Winter Music Conference in Miami, Stephen took time to elaborate on his film and his origins of being a electro “warrior.”

Phase 2 of Ultra Music Festival 12 was just announced and it looks like the producers are pulling out all the stops to bring the absolute best of the best in electronic dance music. With the festival just over 40 days away, we can only imagine what surprises they have up their sleeves.
