From the production boards to the chess boards, the RZA reigns supreme. At the First Annual Chess Kings Invitational this past weekend in San Francisco, RZA proved that he was the hip-hop chess master. The tournament was part of an event in which high school chess teams in the Bay area competed for scholarships. It was held at the San Francisco Design center by the Hip-Hop Chess Federation. RZA beat 7 other celebrities such as GZA, DJ Q-Bert, Rakaa of Dilated Peoples, for a WWE style Championship belt. I’m hoping that a Boggle tournament is in the works for next year so we can see what artist is really quick with the words. Now that RZA has the title, he should make a documentary video about the event and call it “Searching for Bobby Digital”.
Dilated Peoples beatmaker, DJ Babu moves on in the competition! Swiff D was the second to last man standing. Both will advance to the National Final in Oct after three more cities battle it out.
The crowd at the Knitting Factory took their responsibility of judging seriously while 12 local producers went head to head, round after round in this single elimination event. Redbull was flowin' freely, Evidence of Dilated Peoples rocked the mic as an intermission, Big Tune co-creators Vitamin D and J.Moore were the hosts doin' the most, and DJ DV One was on the wheels.
