SXSW 2011: A Recap To Remember

Wild week in Austin would be saying way too little.

As the grinder known as SXSW Music Festival descended upon Austin, Texas for the 25th time, festival-goers would notice immediately that this was pretty big; in the manner that it was most likely the most-attended festival since SXSW’s inception. Sixth Street was a bastion for hipsters, journalists, photographers, DJs, bands and music-hungry young adults looking to find the nearest fix and free party wherever it may be; whilst it was at time a cataclysmic circus around the area, the festival did provide once again its showcase of every band, every genre, and every party imaginable. Jay Electronica Signs To Roc Nation

Jay-Z Discoveres "New Wizard" Three Years After URB Readers

It’s always bittersweet when one of your favorite artists reaches a career pinnicle years after you’ve been championing him. When we first heard that Jay-Z had signed Jay Electronica to The Roc—three years after he appeared on our Next 100 cover—our first thought was “what took so long.” Then we wondered if maybe we should call up Hova and tell him to give us an A&R job with medical, dental, 401k and a company AMEX card, that way we could stop blogging and start “living.” Saves everyone a bunch of time if you think about it. …MORE

Shyne, “Messiah” (MP3)

The Shyning Liberation

My computer is under attack as we speak but I utter a few bars about this minor triumphant return. Imagine being locked down for nearly a dime under dubious circumstances and finally returning to the studio. Try not to hate.

New Jay-Z and Tribe Called Quest Docs In The Works (Video)

Sadly, it’s not one film covering both acts at once, but two documentaries about hip-hop legends Jay-Z and A Tribe Called Quest are coming our way. The Jay-Z film, entitled NY-Z is a love letter to the city Jay refers to as his muse. It captures the September 11, 2009 benefit concert at Madison Square Garden, the same hallowed venue where Jay shot his last concert flick, 2004’s Fade To Black. And much like that previous film, the concert is chocked full of special guests, including Kanye West, Rihanna, Mary J. Blige, Beyonce, Diddy, John Mayer and Pharrell.

Pharrell is also slated to appear in the as yet  untitled documentary by actor Michael Rappaport celebrating the legacy of A Tribe Called Quest. News of the film surfaced on The Neptunes website yesterday, reporting:

A new documentary film will be released …
