Octave One :: Exclusive Live Set (Podcast)

Octave One

Exclusive Live Set

The Burden brothers have been doing things their own way for 20 years, putting out seminal records on Transmat, Underground Resistance and their own legendary imprint, 430 West. It’s been Detroit love the entire way, naturally, even though the home base of Octave One has now switched over to another rich cultural center, Atlanta.

The premise still hasn’t changed; the Burdens are still putting out inspiring, indelible techno music that cannot be duplicated in the slightest. To celebrate the legacy of their long-standing career, Octave One released Revisited (Here, There, and Beyond), a remix retrospective of their classic tracks, carefully reimagined and revamped by artists from techno’s glory days (Luke Slater, Aril Brikha), to current representations of the genre (Sandwell District).

Along with the remix album, the duo have put out a mobile app for smartphones (which you can get at their website, 430west.com) with access to tour dates, exclusive news and media. To commemorate their remix retrospective, as well as show off their technological prowess, the duo offered us a live recording of their set in Bari, Italy, where they dazzled the crowd with a hardware-only live set that is truly stand-alone. Along with that, the brothers took the time to answer some questions about their move to Atlanta, their take on the current state of techno, and their journey to where they are now. Check it all out of after the jump.

Carl Craig Remixes Cut Copy :: “Need You Now” (MP3)

When it comes to ridiculously extended remixes, no one does it quite like Detroit techno icon Carl Craig. Of course, the opening tune off of Cut Copy‘s latest clocks in at almost 8 minutes to begin with, but Craig nealy doubles that while stripping down the tune to some bare bones beats and bleeps. It’s like a satisfying vegan meal. Totally organic and healthy, but you can’t believe how good it is.

Five Festivals You Can Still Get Tickets For

2011 will be remembered in the festival community as the year of the sellout. Coachella sold 75,000 tickets in 124 hours. Seattles Sasquatch festival moved its 100K tix (25,000 per day) in similarly fast fashion, while Pitchfork Festival managed to move all of their three-days passes while only announcing a small portion of the scheduld performers. And it’s all but certain that later mega-fests like Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo will also be overwhelmed by demand over supply. So what do you do it you want to spend a weekend in the sun, but not lose a morning clicking refresh on the ticketmaster website? Fortunately, there’s plenty of more low-key, but not lower quality, summer music festivals on offer. …MORE

PREMIER :: Francesco Tristano – “Mambo” (prod. by Carl Craig) (MP3)

For those who follow the multi-faceted work of Detroit techno icon Carl Craig, the name Francesco Tristano will be familiar for the performances the pair have done in recent years, often with Moritz Von Oswald of Basic Channel fame. But Tristano is more than a sideman for techno royalty. The 29-year old classica pianist is renowned throughout the concert hall world.

Here is the first track off Tristano’s upcoming album, Idiosynkrasia, coming next year. The tune pairs Tristano’s minimal piano work with some crisp Detroit techno sounds.
