You’re never too old to techno. Want proof? VCMG, the Berlin-inspired techno project by Depeche Mode alums Vince Clark and Martin Gore. Despite having 118 years between them, the pair have made one of the finest dance floor ready techno albums we’ve heard in a long time. Perhaps the fact that both have day jobs in platinum selling techno-pop projects meant that there was no need for the usual compromises EDM acts make when producing an album project. A little over a month ago, we were treated to “Spock” the first track from current and former Depeche Mode members Martin Gore and Vince Clarke. And boy was a it a serious banger. The duo, who have been recording under the name VCMG haven’t given up any new tunes since, but we’ll be hearing plenty come March 12 when they release their album, Ssss, on Mute Records. This summer, it was announced that Depeche Mode founding members Vince Clarke and Martin Gore were working together for the first time in 30 years. The pair promised a “techno record” produced under the name VCMG. We have the first results of this reunion, the dark and melodic “Spock,” which will be released as an EP on Mute Records with remixes from Regis, DVS1, Edit-Select and XOQ (aka Überzone).

Most magazine promotional CDs come with one or two decent tracks and a lot of filler. But when the project is to cover U2’s iconic techno-pop album, Achtung Baby, you can recruit some serious heat for the tracklist. Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and The Killers have all recorded versions of tunes from the album for Q Magazine next CD, AHK-toong BAY-bi Covered, which came with the November issue (on stands now).
