El-P @ Santos Party House (Live Review) (Video)

05.21.12

About an hour after the Santos Party House doors had opened, I skipped the long line on Lafayette, one of the few perks of the freelance/poverty lifestyle, only to be groped mercilessly by a security guard upon entering. Trying my best to employ cultural relativism, this being my first rap show since moving to NYC last month, I shook it off and headed for the bar. El-P’s record release show drew an interesting mix from all boroughs, including familiar faces such as Dapwell from Das Racist and Mr. Len of Company Flow. Other special guests, performing guests to be specific, included Atlanta veteran Killer Mike, Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire, Heems, and Nick Diamonds from Islands. To no one’s surprise, the hometown hero El-P sold out the downtown Manhattan venue and left little elbow room to be spoken …

New El-P :: “Drops Over BKLYN” (MP3)

El-P might have shuttered his legendary label Def Jux last year, but the East Coast producer/MC has found a new outlet for his tough and twisted style in Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, who are releasing “Drops Over BKLYN” as part of their singles program, promising 10 tracks in 10 week, and already featuring Best Coast, The Rapture and How To Dress Well.

“Daylight,” the abstract, be-your-own-God anthem which made Aesop a cult hero a decade ago, inspired hearing loss levels of sing along. This night, however, was all about the collaborative spirit between Aesop, Rob Sonic and freak folk impresario Kimya Dawson.

Kid Cudi ft. Cage “Maniac” (MP3)

With a chorus that chants “paint a black hole blacker,” it’s clear that Kid Cudi is sticking with his demon steez on this latest cut, recorded with fellow emotionally challenged rapper and Def Jux veteran Chris ‘Cage‘ Palko. The pair connected over a mutual affection for Shia LeBouf, who directed the video for Cage’s “I Never Knew You” which LeBouf directed.
