88-KEYS: Dope Artists, the Youth, and Ralph Lauren

Interview with 88-Keys

Taking a break from promoting his late 2008 release The Death of Adam, 88-Keys was cool enough to hop on the phone with me and catch me up on his life-post URB’s cover story last November. As the producer of classics like Black Star’s “Thieves in the Night” and three songs on Mos Def’s Black on Both Sides (along with his own solo material), 88 has plenty to brag about. The New York native also just got off tour with college sensation Asher Roth and lonely stoner Kid Cudi as a part of the Great Hangover Tour. We spoke about the reception of the album, the difficulty of deciding what clothing to bring on the road (especially when you own almost the entire Ralph Lauren collection), and bridging the gap from old-school to new-school hip-hop fans.

Izza Kizza Rocks Never Not Fresh

Decon, in conjunction with URB and Okayplayer, presented “Never Not Fresh” at CMJ week with the launch of Decon’s new creative agency. The multimedia event at Sullivan Hall was packed with fresh kicks and hip hop heads on hand for performances by Evidence, Aceyalone, 88-Keys, Izza Kizza, DJ Jaceeoh and DJ Babu. There is much more to anticipate from this innovative and eccentric artist, just as much as 88-Keys’ new album.

88-Keys gave us a preview of his new, Kanye West-executive produced album, The Death of Adam. A hilariously interactive performance had the room participating in the saga of 88-Keys’ boy, Adam, whose story teaches the lessons …

88-Keys/URB/Planet B-Boy Release Party!

Last night, 88-Keys and URB Magazine spent the night enveloped by L.A.’s own billion dollar skyline. The evening was in celebration of 88-Keys’ debut album The Death of Adam (in stores today!), URB Magazines upcoming issue featuring 88 on the cover and Planet B-Boy’s DVD release (out today!). 88 shared his musical taste on the 1’s and 2’s, playing songs from artists that are featured on his debut record.

Planet B-Boy’s DVD was projected on the building across from The Standard, creating a giant drive-in/billboard in the heart of the downtown skyline. The b-boys broke all over the dance floor and definitely showed the crowd how it should be done. Planet B-Boy was also played on The Standard’s plasma screen, entertaining partiers around the bar.
