Florence, Death Cab & Noel Gallagher @ Wrex The Halls (Live Review)

The gravity-challenged audience members at Valley View Casino Center were every bit as captivating as the bands at 91X’s annual Wrex The Halls. As Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds attacked the Oasis classic “Don’t Look Back In Anger,” a tipsy bromancer in the loge section attempted to hug his friend and wound up tackling three individuals in the process. “If I Had A Gun,” the recent hit bringing Gallagher’s blurry artistic vision back into focus, kept most on their feet and highlighted an intriguing set.

Death Cab for Cutie got off to a rocky start due to technical difficulties, but quickly righted the ship with soaring selections from Codes and Keys such as “Stay Young, Go Dancing.” A young couple swing-danced in the aisles to the band’s rhythms before the gentleman lost his footing and ate shit …

Treasure Island Music Festival: Set Times Revealed (Empire of the Sun starts at 9:35pm)

This is an notice to all Northern California residents, Bay Area Residents, Southern California Residents, and/or anybody around the world coming to San Francisco for the wicked Treasure Island Music Festival on October the 15th and 16th. May I have your attention please? Ok, starting today, you should get your shovels, compasses bottles of rum, those old school Shutter Shades (I’m bringing it back), and a google spreadsheet ready because the Treasure Island Festival is next week. Let’s plan our day accordingly because I do not want to be stuck on the Bay Bridge while Warpaint is playing.

Sage Francis: On Li(f)e, Old Age, and Selling Indie Rap

Indie hip-hop and indie rock have always existed in seemingly parallel universes: on separate websites, in separate blogospheres, and on separate stages at the same festivals. Leave it to indie rap stalwart Sage Francis to help the two cross swords. On his fourth official solo album, entitled Li(f)e, Sage works with members of various rock groups, including Sparklehorse, Califone, Calexico, DeVotchKa, Death Cab for Cutie, and others, not to mention the fact that Iron & Wine/Modest Mouse associate Brian Deck produced the whole shebang. URB spoke to Sage about how the hell he pulled off this new LP, growing old in rap years, and how he plans to maintain his record label in an ever-weakening industry.

The music was made by composer Yann Tiersen, and produced by Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine), who produced the entirety of Sage’s new LP. He also collaborated with indie rockers like Califone, Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Chris Walla of Death Cab for Cutie, Tim Fite, Calexico, DeVotchKa, and others. Wilco, Pearl Jam, My Morning Jacket for Free Climate Control Album

Bonnaroo’s climate change awareness album, Best of Bonnaroo, will feature live recordings of Wilco, Pearl Jam and My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists and Jack Johnson.

The plan is to get the free compilation out to people who will then email their Senators, Obama and local media to stand in favor of upcoming climate change legislation. The project is a collaboration between the festival, HeadCount and NRDC Action Fund. The free download is available at Music for Action, where you can also get involved. Tracklisting after the jump.
