The now-trio of mysterious musicians that embody Darkstar are finally geared to release their long-awaited debut album on Hyperdub. After a string of successful singles, “Need You/Squeeze My Lime” and “Aidy’s Girl Is A Computer”, the group pushes their full-length feature after a lengthy space between their last single. Embracing something refreshingly different from the world of bass that surrounds Hyperdub at the moment, the group went through a phase of musical identity crisis and thankfully found their niche in making rich, deviously dark electronic pop music. North will be released in October worldwide, but in the meantime, check out their video for the single, “Gold”, an emotionally-driven take on The Human League’s “You Remind Me Of Gold”. Hyperdub is going on a serious roll at the moment; with the announcement of the long-awaited Darkstar LP finally coming in October as well as upcoming singles from King Midas Sound and (Scratcha) DVA, there’s one more massive bit that’s about to be unleashed: LV’s upcoming ode to Kwaito (South African house), “Boomslang”. While it may be a different sort of release for LV, who’s known for evocative and intricate rhythms around the 140 BPM range, he steps up massively here not only with a banging beat but with the vocal wisdom of Okmalumkoolkat (try saying that ten times fast). Along with that, this video should whet the appetite of anyone who’s ready to take over the dancefloor. This could very well be one of the best tunes of the year. Whilst February brings the shortest month, along with my personal annual growth and much merriment for me, it also breaks the omnipresent lull in the release schedule over Christmas and New Year’s. This coming year appears to be no exception with the simply astounding selection of full length projects and announcements starting to form like Dr Manhattan did, out of human tissue, thin air and matter.
As I’ve previously mentioned in earlier installments of this column, both Starkey and Scuba have long players ready for consumption, competently and simultaneously representing both ends of the dubstep spectrum. Scuba’s Triangulation positively floats in places, combating skeletal 85bpm tempos as much as the house tempo; whilst Starkey’s Ear Drums & Black Holes connects the dots between Philly swagger, his own deft compositional ear, and UK grime music featuring vocal appearances from P Money, Cerebral Vortex …

Anyone who comes to URB should know, we cover an extensive amount of music from every genre and subgenre. Things aren’t always easily to compile in lists, especially putting together “top ten” lists. Now try doing that with the generalization of a genre called “electronic music.” Some people still don’t know what the difference between techno and house is, and of course we’re here to provide the difference. But, we’re also here to show our appreciation to the tracks that have made us move, groove, bop, boom, and, most importantly, enjoy every second from the first beat to the last. It wasn’t easy, but it sure as hell was a journey. Welcome to my top ten electronic tracks of the year. Take a seat and crank the speakers to eleven: it’s a doozy of a read.
