DOOM’s Top 10 Music Videos

In hip-hop history, there’s never been an artist more enigmatic than Daniel Dumile. He began his career as Zev Love X before disappearing for years to mourn a brother, gain weight and smoke enough White Owl blunts to significantly change his voice. As if that wasn’t enough to shroud his past, he put on a metal mask and began to call himself MF Doom. More nicknames came after, but if the number of microphone personalities was the lone criteria than Kool Keith would be more of an enigma than DOOM. It’s more than that with DOOM, the mask never comes off.

Just as Andy Kauffman never let the joke end and drew no line between reality and performance art, DOOM challenges fans as “rap’s supervillain.” Whether he has actually sent impostors to perform his songs has never been proven, but it’s an indisputable fact that he’s pissed off a lot of cash-paying, concert-going fans. It’s a testament to his verbal linguistics and an odd ear for music with superhuman powers (like turning the most insane production into borderline pop music). In DOOM’s case, the artist exists solely as the art. He rarely does interviews and has released very little new material over the past few years, but was incredibly prolific before that.

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of Doomsday, his classic debut as MF Doom, the supervillain is releasing a massive box set with alternate versions, b-sides and instrumentals on his own Metalface Records (you can order it via Stones Throw)…and URB.com had to count down Daniel Dumile’s 10 best dizzying videos.

Jack White & Danger Mouse :: “Two Against One” (MP3)

You knew Jack White wasn’t going to stay quiet following the news of The White Stripes splitting up last week. Hell, the fallow years leading up the duo’s split were some of White’s most prolific, with The Raconteuers and The Dead Weather releasing no less than three albums since the Stripes unintended swan song, 2007’s Icky Thump. So it’s little surprise to hear White pop up on this new project by cross-genre producer Danger Mouse, whose studio pairing have ranged from hit making with Damon Albarn (as Gorillaz) and Cee-Lo (as Gnarls Barkley) to more oblique work with David Lynch and Sparklehorse.

“Two Against One” finds White contributing vocals to Danger Mouse’s latest collaboration with Italian composer Daniele Luppi under the name Rome. It’s quiet yet foreboding acoustic melodramatic sound is exactly the sort of song we like to hear White over when the guitars aren’t wailing.

You can hear it over at Antiquiet. …MORE

Evidence x The Beatles Project Leaked (MP3)

The latest chapter in rap’s continuing love affair with the Beatles comes via Evidence’s I Don’t Need Love. Although the project was not initially intended to leak, the Dilated emcee has embraced it and spread the free download for public consumption. Following in the footsteps of Danger Mouse’s The Grey Album, Evidence’s record is a unique mash-up of two very disparate styles highlighted by the soulful opener “Because.” The production on the nine song outing employs the Beatles’ vocals as instruments unto themselves. Guest shots on I Don’t Need Love include Rakaa, Oh No, Fashawn and a hilarious cameo from Dirt Nasty on the hidden track. Look out for Evidence’s Rhymesayers debut Cats & Dogs in 2011.

Broken Bells @ The Wiltern 10/06/10 (Review)

While I’ve already seen Broken Bells twice before their show on Wednesday 10/06 at the legendary Wiltern in LA, their live performances have always had a particular experiential magic to them, something which I have found special enough to draw me to their performances time and time again. Broken Bells, comprised of James Mercer (of The Shins) and Brian Burton (Danger Mouse), released their self-titled debut album back in March and have been playing shows all across the country, including (albeit secretly) at festivals such as SXSW. The quality of their artistry is undeniable, and their small yet profound body of work gives them accessibility not true for bands with much larger and more thorough discographies. Broken Bells’ novelty stems primarily from their imaginative instrumentation and genre-pushing collaborative work in which, in addition to the group …
