Dan Black: Symphonies Of The Night

The pop champion takes time out of jet-lag revival to have a chat.

Eccentricity is a valuable thing to have nowadays. In the music world, it can leave an impression; whether it be stark, memorable or shocking, being out-of-the-box leaves a mark. In pop music, we have artists who go too far visually and not let the music speak for their eccentricity, but then we someone like Dan Black, who is the perfect balance of forward-thinking and pop sensibility. On his debut album UN, Black surrounds listeners with tracks that maintain a balance of fun, intuitive and catchy pop melodies that will keep you humming. He’s caught the attention of artists in different worlds (Hot City to Kid Cudi) and attracts everyone to just dance. Cudi x Green Lantern x Broke Mogul Present “How to Make it in America” Mixtape (MP3)

For a little more hype around How to Make it in America, Cudi and his crew have released this mixtape as if it were a roster of who’s who right now. But this is quite good, starting early with a current favorite, the remix of Dan Black’s “Symphonies” featuring Cudi, and touching on Chromeo, Lupe and Kenna’s Haiti track, and UK indie firecrackers Florence & The Machine and The XX, among others. In the intro, Cudi says the way to make it in America is to “cut through all the bullshit.” This mix sounds honors that statement.

Dan Black x Kid Cudi “Symphonies” Remix (MP3)

Meet Dan Black. He landed on the music radar in spring 2008 with “HYPNTZ,” a cut sampling Rihanna’s drums from that ditty “Umbrella” and a tribute of sorts to Notorious B.I.G.’s “Hypnotize,” and now he has a tidy debut ready for the airwaves. In the interim, he labored over the record, tediously blending Nelly Furtado with Daft Punk with The Smiths like a scientist in a lab. And now Cudi has laid down vocals for this remix of “Symphonies.”  It’s quite clever to bring the Man on the Moon star together with Black, whose sound can be summed up as sublime emotional dreamscapes Parisienne style.
