Kanye West Signs Mos Def, Consolodates Power (Video)

Kanye West has always had some of the tendencies of a great dictator—a unnerving drive for control, a freakish aptitude for sharp looking apparel. Now Yeezy (a cool El Duce nickname if you will) has expanded his power-base in hip-hop, adding Mos Def to his oft dormant G.O.O.D. Music label. Mos joins the likes of Pusha T (of Clipse), Common, Kid Cudi, GLC, John Legend and Big Sean who will kiss the ring of Kanye as he signs checks (or something like that).

All this while Kanye has been reeling in his more artsy musical musings in exchange for real hip-hop. He’s not just back to playing the game. He’s starting his own new league. The question is—not will Kanye be able …

John Legend & The Roots – Wake Up! (Review)

John Legend & The Roots

Wake Up!

Released by Sony

Perhaps it’s the feeling that this album came about two years too late. Perhaps it’s the fact that The Roots already made an album this summer that encapsulated the political, social and economic unrest felt across our nation in How I Got Over. Kanye West ft. Common, Pusha T, Kid Cudi, Big Sean and Charlie Wilson, “Good Friday” (MP3)

Kanye takes us down nostalgia drive with this new song from his G.O.O.D Friday series. It features Common, Pusha T, Kid Cudi, Big Sean and Charlie Wilson and they all work together! So much more cohesive, together, simpler and fresh. This track seems like something out off College Dropout which is a nice nod back to both Kanye’s Chicago days but also a time where it was all a bit more stripped down. Not that I don’t like his new sounds but I think variety is the spice of life. I dig it, this song makes me feel like I’m driving down with high school friends watching the foliage line the city streets, just having a good time, relaxing, breathing etc.

Donn T :: Soulful Futuristic Dance Music (interview) (MP3)

Get ready for Donn T, she’s the sister of everybody’s favorite late night drummer ?uestlove, and her new album Kaleidoscopic is out for global release. The Philly native and global citizen is no newcomer to the music scene; her parents were touring musicians and she’s been working behind the scene with Common (“I Am Music”), the Randy Watson Experience (”Morning Bell”), licensed music for TV and film,  and shared stage with artists like Amy Winehouse, Zap Mama, John Legend, Les Nubians, Floetry and more. Now it’s Donn T’s turn to be the headliner. The album is produced by the French broken beat wizard and jazzman Dj Simbad, and with Kaleidoscopic they go on a genre-busting journey where he backs her beautiful deep vocals and lyrics with a broad range of moods, styles and tempos. …MORE
