Phil Spector and his lawyers suffered a major setback today when LA County Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fiddler rejected their attempts to use diary excerpts from the actress Spector is accused of murdering to “raise questions about her lifestyle”.

In case you haven’t been following, Spector is accused of shooting and killing Lana Clarkson at his Alhmabra manse a few hours after meeting her at the House of Blues during a night out in West Hollywood. Today’s developments are a major blow to the defense’s case that Clarkson found a gun in a stranger’s house and committed “accidental”(?) suicide on a whim.

This case sounds pretty cut and dry. I mean, I appreciate Spector’s contributions to the American canon of music and all, but the man who invented the Wall of Sound …

Kanye, Beasties join fight to save planet

Two of the seven line ups for Live Earth Al Gore's multi-continental attempt to harness the power of music to fight global warming are out today. The big event will take place Jul 7 at sites around the globe starting in Australia and rolling around the planet until it concludes in New Jersey.

Pharrell, Corinne Bailey Rae, Bloc Party, Bon Jovi and others had been previously announced as performers, and today with the line-ups for the shows at London's Wembley Stadium and Jersey's Giants Stadium, The Beastie Boys, Kanye West, Ludacris, Madonna, and Smashing Pumpkins.

Tickets are on sale next week for these shows, with line-up yet to be announced for Sydney's Aussie Stadium, Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach, Johannesburg's Cradle of Human Kind, Tokyo's Tokyo Stadium and a location in Shanghai, TBD. There was also …

Rock Hall inducted wrong 5

The MSM attack on hip hop continued today with Fox News reporting 60s British invasion band The Dave Clark Five actually received more votes for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame than hip hop pioneers Grand Master Flash & The Furious Five, but things were rigged to get a rap act into the Hall.

I’m not the biggest fan of Fox News and I trust them even less when they use unanimous sources so I’m not taking this story to be 100% bonafide, especially since reporter Roger Friedman really uses this as a chance to attack Rolling Stone mogul Jann Wenner who now chairs the Hall’s foundation. Clark's Body Riddle LP will eventually be declared one of 2006's greats lost classics, although here one of its standout cuts is sent out into the world to spread the word. The clattersome, vibrophonic original is hectic enough, so Board of Canada protege Bibio takes things down a level on the re-rub, retaining the melody but turning it into a gorgeous electrofolk masterpiece.
