Check out the promo video for Rockie Fresh‘s upcoming mixtape, “The Other Side.” The best thing to come out of Chicago for a minute (a pretty long minute, if you ask me…), Rockie combines the rhyming scheme of an intelligent hustler, a la J. Cole or Drake, and the alluring obscurity of Imogen Heap-sampling beats. After you check out the promo video, be sure to check out the video for my favorite Rockie track, “What’s The Hurry,” along with Rockie Fresh’s fresh-ass website. Keep your eyes on this one folks— this dude could be the Derek Rose of rap Chi-Town has been waiting for. Shout-out to Justin Oh, who’s killing the visuals. The mixtape drops December 16th.
Mark Farina is a jack of all trades but the Mushroom Jazz series has been one of his most prominent and most sought after releases. It’s a bit rare to get someone from Chicago to make something so minimal. Chicago in a way feels the second city tag and tries to fight it by being exuberant (with our wholesome please and thank you’s) which defines much of the Chicago culture but not Mark. I sat down with Mark Farina to discuss the old days when Chicago was grimier but a bit more alive than it is today.
Last week, we decided to take a few minutes and spotlight some of our favorite local resident DJs from around the country. And the response from the DJ community and URB readers was so overwhelming that we decided to make it a new weekly feature. So keep leaving your suggestions for face local DJ in the comment section (please include links, residencies, styles) and we’ll keep checking them out and profile the jocks we like the best.
Here’s the new DJs for this week…
Got a favorite local DJ? Tell us in the comments section and maybe we’ll add them to the list. …MORE
We’re going on almost three years time since The Cool Kids graced the cover of URB magazine, and there’s still no proper full-length on the horizon. While this has to be some sort of frustrating record set by Chuck Inglish and Mikey Rocks, we can’t stay mad when they periodically drop a track like “Big Talk.” Three listens in and we still can’t figure out what the heck that buzzing sample is supposed to be. If “Big Talk” becomes a hit, will the ‘ketamine hornet’ sound become all the rage in hip-hop?
Sometimes I binge on on Kpop and then I feel way too sugary, too effervescent – and then all I feel like doing is that move they do in moshpits where the person is both kicking and punching the air, sometimes an innocent bystander — sometimes a wall. Well if you, like me, feel like any of the above you should send over your e-mail address, phone number and name to email@example.com for your chance to win a pair of tickets to catch Huoratron at Evil Olive Chicago, IL; on Thursday Novemeber 11, 2010. Contest closes tonight, you can catch Huoratron on tour now — check out the tour dates after the jump. *open only to 21+
