Broken Bells @ The Troubadour 3/14 (Review)

James Mercer and Brian Burton's sold out LA show 

Creating a complete and engaging live musical experience is a tough feat. Having only about forty minutes of material to draw from greatly complicates the situation. “Would it be wrong?” Not for Broken Bells.  For Broken Bells, also known as Brian Burton (typically known by his alias Danger Mouse) and James Mercer (lead singer of The Shins), this was effortless.  Broken Bells have built upon their musical efforts on their self-titled Broken Bells at the Troubadour in Los Angeles this past Sunday 3/14 with a lively, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable performance.  As their final show on their mini-tour which included London, Paris, and New York (next they’re headed to SXSW), Broken Bells have put on a moving and memorable performance that highlights the creative possibilities of this so-called supergroup formed during the collaborative work by Burton and David Lynch (which …

Bilal “High & Dry” Radiohead Cover “listen before you leave” (Video)

Okay, 1st off, I didn’t take the photo at the bottom so not trying to claim I did it was on google. And if anybody saw the links I posted recently knows I’m a lil’ overwhelmed the last 24 hours in terms of what to put up & what is coming soon. Let’s just get this established 1st off, Bilal’s easily one of the best male vocalists I’ve ever seen. I saw Common’s performance on jimmy kimmel live for the finding forever LP & Universal Mind Control. He goes hard in the paint. Can we all agree on that? I think yea, if you never heard Bilal’s 1st born second on interscope your missing out on some of the best Dilla beats 1st off, I mean “Reminisce feat. Kid Sister has teased us over the last three years, giving us tastes of her cheeky and impeccable flow, spunky personality onstage, and hyper antics during interviews. The tracks that made the blog rounds two to three years ago, like “Control” and the Kanye-assisted “Pro Nails" had everyone dancing and curious to see what A-Trak’s lady could really do beyond making the rounds at Chicago hipster parties.

Gnarls Barkley: Total Recall

They changed the way a song becomes a hit. They wore joking costumes while singing about sex with dead people. And they joined Jethro Tull in the canon of famous bands named after imaginary people. But who is Gnarls Barkley, really? (by Andrew Parks) 

Something seems a little out of place. We really shouldn’t be here. I know it. Danger Mouse knows it. And a pajama-clad Cee-Lo knows it. Just ask the cocktail waitress who’s silently judging Cee-Lo’s manager, curtly asking for a hotel room key before allowing us one step further onto a penthouse patio full of suits and ultra-smooth $15 martinis. Of course, as soon as we show proof of residence, she’s quick to fill our drink order. Just some tap water, thanks. Oh, and a Diet Coke for Danger Mouse. Hiding underneath simple shades and an oversized sweatshirt, he’s still recovering from the night before, an afterparty attended by-as Cee-Lo states proudly-actor Efren Ramirez who played Pedro in Napoleon Dynamite.
