Live Review: Ed Banger Seventh Anniversary Party

The beginning of the end may come in a packed house of preteens.

The world of electronic music shifts accordingly to scenes, trends and fads at any given moment. Most of these have a shelf life that withers away within 12-18 months with a re-invention of the prior music scene taking bits and pieces and shining them up into something new and receptive. The world of French/filter house’s decline in the early 2000s gave rise to the formation of the now-famed Ed Banger Records, run by former Daft Punk manager Pedro “Busy P” Winter. Focusing on releasing music that had a slight feel of the past as a well a loud vision of the future, Busy P began work by signing artists such as Sebastian, Kavinsky, DJ Mehdi and the now-golden boys that are Justice. With seven years of music, touring and support from all over the world, Ed Banger landed in New York City to celebrate its seventh anniversary to a packed house at Terminal 5. What ensued is what many patrons accepted as a rowdy good time with distorted bass, an almost rock-show atmosphere and lots of screaming fans; however, for people rooted in the electronic world, they might have expected something entirely and radically different. …MORE

Felix Cartal “Popular Music” and Tour Dates (MP3)

Here’s the first rave-inducing track from Felix Cartal’s debut record, Popular Music, due out on the 23rd via Dim Mak. With its punchy beats, tantalizing vocals, and murky instrumentation, the track is wonderfully addictive. But then again, Cartal must know how to make a banger after having remixed the likes of MSTRKRFT and pop stars like Brit Brit, as well as opening for Justice and Busy P. This time around, he opened his Rolodex and invited Johnny Whitney (The Blood Brothers, Jaguar Love), Todd Fink (The Faint) and Austrian newcomers Beta Bow. We’re expecting nothing short of earth-shattering (no pressure). Tour dates after the jump.

Busy P: Face to Face

After a decade of managing masked icons Daft Punk, Pedro "Busy P" Winter discovers the power of his own mug

By Joshua Glazer

Thomas Bangalter is taller than you’d expect. That’s the first impression one has when the bearded (no helmet) member of Daft Punk unassumingly dips into the basement dressing room of Hollywood megaclub Avalon, where the even taller Pedro Winter is moving comfortably around the scrum of well-wishers, freeloaders, scenesters and photographers. Only local LA jock Them Jeans is taller still…he’s six-footeight. As by design, few recognize the unmasked silver robot. But everyone knows who Pedro is, and he’s quick to offer an introduction and a drink. A pro mingler from years of backstage activity-first as a promoter, then as manager of Daft Punk and, most recently, head of the impossibly hip Ed Banger Records-Pedro knows his way around a room.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been three years since …
