5. Octave One – Live

The Burden brothers have been doing things their own way for 20 years, putting out seminal records on Transmat, Underground Resistance and their own legendary imprint, 430 West. It’s been Detroit love the entire way, naturally, even though the home base of Octave One has now switched over to another rich cultural center, Atlanta.

The premise still hasn’t changed; the Burdens are still putting out inspiring, indelible techno music that cannot be duplicated in the slightest. To celebrate the legacy of their long-standing career, Octave One released Revisited (Here, There, and Beyond), a remix retrospective of their classic tracks, carefully reimagined and revamped by artists from techno’s glory days (Luke Slater, Aril Brikha), to current representations of the genre (Sandwell District).

If you’ve not heard the name of Monsieur Monsieur yet in the electronic music world, you’ll be hearing more about them sooner than you think. The duo of Léo Copet and Geoffrey Bougy hail not from Paris but from Reims, where previously French electro reigned king. That’s not to happen on their watch, as they’ve just made their stamp on the scene with their captivating take on all things sub-sonic, splitting BROMANCE5 with the likes of Jacques Lu Cont. Their debut track, “Arym”, straddles the line between minimalist reproach and party techno in a disciplined yet striking fashion; in a way that surely have them popping on everyone’s radar pretty fast. We spoke with the duo about getting signed to Bromance, how they met, and what’s next for Monsieur Monsieur. Check out the interview post-jump.

URB: How did the two of you meet and become Monsieur Monsieur?
MM: We are both from Reims, France – we have known each other for a long time now! At first, we weren’t really friends, but we both used to go to the only electronic music party in our town called Bonheur Binaire and the Festival Elektricity. After meeting there a couple of times, we decided to work together in the studio. We created the name Monsieur Monsieur a few days before our first gig, which was in the Summer of 2008 for France’s national holiday with our hometown friends Yuksek and Brodinski in a very small pub.

URB: How long have you guys been producing (separately and together) and what do you think each of you bring to the creative process from one another?

We have been producing for seven years separately, and four years together. During the creative process, Geoffrey brings some craziness and Léo brings the rigour and precision. It’s a good way to work. We are very complementary!

URB: Your mix for Kiss FM was mesmerizing; lot of different styles of straight-forward dance music. What are you trying to implement in your DJ sets that make you different from your national contemporaries?

MM: We built our mix for Kiss FM as a real DJ set we would play in a club. During our DJ sets, we try to focus on how the track would feel in the club or at a festival. There are a lot of differences between listening to music at home versus in a club setting – the atmosphere of a track is really different. We love to play a big techno track with a good kick with another track at the same time. For example, we play Duke Dumont’s “The Giver” with Hans Bouffmyhre’s “Hurricane.” This combination gives so much more power to the Duke Dumont track. This technique indicates how we’re different from other French contemporaries, I think. We like playing three or four tracks simultaneously – and this guarantees we’re never bored!

URB: How did you link up with Bromance and how has it been working with such a distinguished young label?

MM: We have been friends with Louis (Brodinski) for a long time now. We attended school together and have the same friends in our hometown. We also toured with Myd from Club Cheval few years ago. We met Mike (Gesaffelstein) during his first gig with Brodinski. With the internet and all the changes happening in the music industry, everything is very different. It’s great to work with a distinguished young label where everything happens quickly and you know each person you are working with. It’s not the same for all the major.

URB: Finally, what’s next for Monsieur Monsieur for the rest of this year and beyond?

MM: We spend most of our time right now in the studio working on remixes and new original tracks. We’re hoping to release some new material in early 2013. When we’re not in the studio, we are touring with our Bromance family.

The past few years have been momentous for the likes of Louis Brodinski; the 24-year old producer/DJ has been busy taking up many tasks from curating and running a label, to representing a very intensively particular bromantic set of musical principles. The thing is, while Brodinski has meandered through the auspices of big-room publicity and the adulation of the underground and “EDM” cultural figures, he still retains a strong understanding of what good music should be played and what good music should be listened to. Brodinski is a very interesting person to have for our podcast series, because truthfull we didn’t give him much guidance in making it, we just said go “as deep as possible”. The results? A fantastic mix of jacking house, techno and Bromance-related mayhem. Check out Brodinski’s exclusive URB podcast, as well as lengthy interview with him about his label, Bromance, after the jump.

URB: First off, congrats on Bromance. It seems like its off to a stunning start. What was the reasoning behind putting the label together, when you and Gessafelstein are obviously doing very well for yourselves at the moment?
BRODINSKI: It’s been a while since I’ve started thinking about putting a label together; I’m a tastemaker but when I love the artist and music massively, I will get really excited and make my excitement upfront, sending it to everyone I know. So, because of that energy, I figured I would start a label and do that exact thing. For a while I was looking for artists, and with Mike (Gessafelstein), it seemed like a right thing to do. Mike is an integral part of it because he is mixing and mastering, it sounds fresh and different. The approach is strictly Bromance. We started in November 2011, with a split 12” from myself and Mike. BROMANCE 004 is Gessafelstein’s “Rise of Depravity”.

URB: When did you realise that you wanted to start the label and what do you hope to do with it in the future as it grows with each release?
B: When I created the label, I wanted to put my music out when I wanted to do it, not deal with other label constrictions; schedules and such. Now, with myself, I can decide what to do which is pretty much amazing. The next release is a Danny Brown EP releasing on August 20th with a Gessafelstein remix. We’re working on some stuff that can be played all-over, not just on dancefloors.

URB: How did you and Gessafelstein meet and what was the “eureka” moment, when you both realised that a label was the right move for the both of you?
B: We met about two and a half years ago at my residency at a club in Paris, and he played his live show which was right up my alley in terms of vibe. We became fast friends after that, and within our talks, we thought the creation of a label was the right move and with my manager, Manu, we knew it was the right group of people to work around.

URB: What would you say are the vibes of anyone who releases on Bromance, sonically?
B: Every time someone asks me what I play in a set, it’s difficult to simplify. it’s just releasing music that I love from all aspects, and most importantly, it’s music that is good.

URB: What’s your take on American dance culture nowadays? Certainly, you have a sizable following and are playing big US festivals to kids raised on a steady diet of electro house and “dubstep”, but you’re obviously presenting a take on club music that is risky to people who are uneducated. Do you think if you play Bromance tunes out that you risk the music going over the crowd’s heads?
B: We are certainly not underground, but we’re not going to just the crowd what they want. We’re going to be right in the middle; but not exactly *laughs*. We’re going to range from Mark Broom to Bauuer, sounds that are so different but it’s not pegged to a certain style or lifestyle. Playing Bromance-related stuff really revolves around friends doing a label for now, it’ll take time and such but I want to be talking this label in five years, telling a story involvingthe music that I loved from day one its inception.

URB: What labels inspired you to consider making your own?
B: Ed Banger Records and Boys Noize Records, everything sounds perfect for the club and perfect for the sound that they cater, it’s not exactly mainstream-oriented. Also, labels like Hotflush and Hemlock; to release music that is consistently amazing. Phantasy and Clone, as well. A record label should be music that one can love, not just for DJs.

URB: What labels should people be on the lookout for, in your opinion?
B: I think people need to not forget about mix CDs, like the Fabric CDs and DJ-Kicks, like recently from Maya Jane Coles. You have to be introduced to the format of a DJ and the multiple styles they go through to really appreciate all forms of music; like something of Andrew Weatherall’s Fabric mix.

If you’ve heard of Club Cheval by now, it’s probably through their solo projects that have pulverized dancefloors from France and beyond. Whether it be the bombast of Myd and Sam Tiba, to the outlandish adventurousness of Panteros666, or the all-encompassing productions of Canblaster; the four men of Club Cheval are all in their own rights, in the right frame of mind to change the dance landscape once again. So naturally, when they got signed to Brodinski’s Bromance imprint, the timing, the label and the vibe seemed right. It made perfect sense, considering you need a bromance to make music like this. With their first official Club Cheval track out now (split with a new Brodinski cut), they took the time to speak to URB about their roles, their history and what’s next. Check out the interview with Club Cheval as well as their peculiar video for “Now U Realize” after the jump.

URB: You’re a collective of producers working together constantly; how doesthe production process work for you? Does someone have a specific role in constructing Club Cheval tracks?

CLUB CHEVAL: Only recently we started to split up our roles. It kinda started with a Panteros track feat. Club Cheval (“Horreo”) in which we used fantasy music producer names : Canblaster is melodius (his obsession with Japanese emotional future chords), Myd is Cutos (his love for vocal cut ups), Sam Tiba is ghettus (his knowledge in ghetto music) & Panteros is rhytmos (he used to be a death metal drummer).

URB: Ever since the page was turned from Kavinsky, Justice and Sebastian, producers like yourselves and the Sound Pellegrino crew have come and flipped the perceived notion of French electronic music on its face. Was that your intention in any way, and how do you feel nowadays representing a sound that’s adventurous and eccentric?

CC: Kavinsky has never been so famous than today! As Club Cheval we mostly dig french techno. Of Course, we all love french touch but we don’t refer to it that much in our productions. Our intention has always been to come with an innovative sound, not replicate the big french electronic acts! So our music sounds adventurous just because we come up with our ideas, not ideas copied on others.

URB: How did you get linked up with Bromance?

CC: We all work together ! Our manager Manu Barron also manages Brodinksi & Gesaffelstein. And we are all superfriends. Like a big musical family. Doing a lot of stupid things with people helps created unbreakable links. Bromance is like that.

URB: You all have your separate productions that are great; but what do you get out of making music together as opposed to settling to your own sounds?

CC: It’s like asking the difference between four Power Rangers and the mega-combination of them. We’re stronger when we work all together. We all have special skills and abilities, and it’s always mad useful to ask someone to do something you’re not the best at. This gives way much possibilities than when we’re alone. We help a lot each other for our solo productions too but the magic really happens when we share the same connected brain. This is like the perfect fusion, with no ego issues, or an “I’m better than you” thing. We’re all better than each other for some certain things, and that’s what’s good.

URB: What’s next for Club Cheval in 2012?

CC: A lot of things. At first, we’re going to tour a lot with a 4DJ -DJ SET Formula, something that we didn’t do much until now. We’re used to play b2b but this summer tour (and fall/winter tour) will be something different, we can smell it. We’re of course still working on the next Club Cheval original tracks, remixes, and mixtapes, as usual. All day everyday in the studio, that’s what we do. Apart from that, we still produce Brodinski’s tracks, and work with some singers and rappers for some other projects. In one word, MUSIC is what’s next for us in 2012. The best of us is yet to come.

“Admit it, deep inside you’ve always thought of BUSY P as Santa Claus to Ed Banger’s North Pole. And you knew DJ MEHDI was kind of the African cousin to the Whipping Father. Well, guess what? This winter they gathered their favourite newcomers, added a couple of old-timers, mixed them together and cooked the best holiday electronic dish. A brand new compilation of all fresh and unreleased music, down and up-tempo, love and dub-step, warm and cold-beats, and more international than Jesus. Just like the season.”

- Pedro Winter [http://busyp.coolcats.fr/2011/01/let-the-children-techno-4/]

Compilation CDs tend to be one of the following: a mix of tracks that cater solely to the tastes of the person that created it (though sometimes, just sometimes, proving to flow better than expected), or plain bad. Why not listen to your own playlist? You can finally figure out how to work iTunes DJ for Christ’s sake.

Let The Children Techno does none of the above. This twenty track CD, compiled and mixed by Busy P and Dj Mehdi of Ed Banger Records, is actually worth the listen. And by that I mean worth taking the time to try a million passwords before you can sign into your old MySpace account to stream the mix. And not be disappointed. The compilation is made up entirely of new, unreleased music from artists such as Siriusmo, Brodinski and Tony Senghore, L-Vis 1990, Flying Lotus, Mr. Oizo, SebastiAn, Breakbot, Feadz, Cassius, Skream, Gesaffelstein, Para One & Tacteel, Zombie Nation, Discodeine, Bobmo, Riton, Dumont, Mattie Safer, Duke Dumont, and Djedjotronic.

Needless to say, for any techno-electro fan, this is like the birthday party of the millennium that you desperately want to be invited to. The crew from Ed Banger Records was able to gather friends and family and rally – to take time off of their own individual projects and each create something fresh.

As Pedro Winter aka Busy P, creator of Ed Banger Records, says himself, there’s down, up, warm, cold, love, and dub – a little bit of something for everyone, and a whole lot of goodness all around. The workings of each track are particular to the artist who made the contribution, and if anything have you listening closer to see what each really wanted to bring to the plate on the all star mix. Breakbot gets you moving with a hand clapping “Shades of Black,” Gesaffelstein’s “The Voice” gives you chills like a Michael Jackson “Thriller,” Feadz does 80s synths like a pro on “Far From Home,” Flying Lotus’s “Caravan of Delight” is beyond entrancing, and SebastiAn and Cassius bring it on home with “Enio” and “Shark Simple.” Oh, and it’s safe to say that DJ Mehdi’s “Tragicomehdi” and Busy P’s “Procrastinator” alone could have you pulling out that credit card and making an online purchase of the whole compilation.

Bravo Ed Banger!

Available for purchase at coolcats.fr.

The current wave of electronic artists range from the wickedly fresh to the bizarre; with genres that occupy the umbrella of worldwide sounds coming together on a dance it can be difficult to find a stand-alone identity in the midst of it all. Then there’s Egyptrixx, a Toronto-based producer that has made massive steps in securing a dark, foreboding sound in supposedly house tempos. While he’s been on a fantastic remix tip (ranging from Subeena, The Aikiu, Brodinski) it’s his original productions that spark up something…different on a floor (i.e. “Liberation Front). The sound embodied is dark, moody and powerful, striking chords with people who want something more out of their night on the floor. With a rampant international fanbase, Egyptrixx plays out constantly live and each performance changes from the next, with something to look forward to every time out. Finally, in 2011, his album Bible Eyes will be released on the almighty Night Slugs label. Luckily for URB, Egyptrixx not only took the time to answer a few questions, but also premiere a scintillating music video highlighting a piece from his upcoming album. Check out “Start From The Beginning” and the interview after the jump.

EGYPTRIXX INTERVIEW

URB: What are the origins of Egyptrixx?

EGYPTRIXX: I started this project a few years ago out of boredom basically; A band I had been playing in dissolved so I decided to make music on my own for a bit. Around the same time I was listening to some house and techno records a friend had left at my house. Initially, it was a very part-time project…experimenting with different sounds and production techniques whenever I had spare time from my studies. Its grown from there. I’ll be releasing my first LP early in the new year, which was loosely written as a tribute to my great-grandmother – the only other musician in my lineage. She was an impressive woman who supported her disabled husband (struck twice by lightning) and (very large) family during the depression by playing the organ at funerals.

URB: Your sound is definitely out on its own, individual and always evolving; how did you shift from the past couple of years into your current sound?

E: I’m not sure how to articulate personal preference other than to say that my only goal has always been to make music that feels right based on what I’m hearing, sounds I enjoy and the state of my life. I’ve deliberately kept this project as vaguely defined as possible so that I can take it wherever.

URB: Aside from your individualistic sound, your live show is also something to behold. What do you think differentiates you doing live shows from other people’s DJ set?

E: My aim in designing a live set was to create something very personal and expressive, I wanted to present my music in the best way possible. Also frankly, I’m not really coming from the background of a DJ, so something more performance-centered feels natural. I like knowing that every night could be a total flop and I like not having the ability to adapt.

URB: Your album is being released on both Night how did you come about releasing it through the label and why?

E: I’m totally excited to be doing the record with Night Slugs; I love this label as a fan and as a musician.

URB: Elaborate on the video that you just worked on, and is video going to be part of something bigger for Egyptrixx?

E: The video is by Andreas Fischer aka DATDATDAT, who I’ve been a big fan of for ages. I went to his studio in Berlin to hang out and chat about possibly working together and played him some stuff from the album. He immediately liked Start from the Beginning and the rest was history. Andreas works primarily with shareware and free software. I love the idea of an A/V performance – for example, Audion’s A/V “Hecatomb” tour was brilliant – but i don’t have any concrete plans right now. I’ll do it when it makes sense conceptually and pragmatically.

However, this is only the beginning for the bubbling hot label, as co-owner Alex Sushon (better known by his production/DJ alias Bok Bok) is ready to unleash upcoming Slugs dubs on this exclusive mix for URB. Along with vocal reminders from MC Jammer, Bok Bok guides us through a maddening and rhythmically fruitful journey between cracking synth lines and hypnotic drum patterns in a mix that’s sure to break your speakers. Thank him when it’s over. Bok Bok will also be embarking on a North American tour and coming to a town near you. Dates, tracklist and mix down below.

The hour long set mixed by DJ Brodinski features hectic, head-pounding electro and house, as would be expected from one of the up and coming stars of French electronica scene. At times, the set tends to drone on, but it’s forgivable granted the beats he picks are solid and each track is blended well: it’s hard not to appreciate its dance-floor appeal, something we can trust Brodinski knows all about. All in all this mix is enough to have anyone dancing, as it mixes larger names with the underground lesser-knowns. Highlights include the Duke Dumont remix of Late Of The Pier’s ‘Bathroom Gurgle,’ the Djedjotronic remix of Tiga’s ‘Shoes’ and DJ Zinc’s ‘Blunt Edge.’ He was even kind enough to throw in pal Yuksek’s track ‘Supermenz,’ which brings the set to a nice close.
