Among the hundreds of indie labels that lost tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of dollars in merchandice in the weekend’s SONY/PIAS warehouse fire in London, legendary imprint WARP Records is now reporting that most of their 21 year backstock was destroyed. In a statement issued on their website, the label explained the current status of upcoming releases by CANT, Plaid and Battles. More concerning was the reality that some old releases—classic electronic music from Aphex Twin, Autechre, Broadcast and hundreds of other—my never be available in physical form again.
Other beloved labels similarly effected include 4AD, Ninja Tune and Domino. An emergency fund has been set up to help all of the indie labels recover from this devistating blow.

Scott “Prefuse 73” Herren has a long career of shifting sonic shapes under various guises. But Prefuse has always been a reliably beat-choppy affair, that is, perhaps, until now. This sampler reveals the newest Prefuse album, The Only She Chapters, to sound rather dark, lush and brooding—not words you’d be more likely to apply to one of Herren’s other personas, perhaps Savath Y Savalas. The album also features a variety of female vocalist (another trait more common with SyS), including dearly departed Broadcast singer Trish Keenan, Zola Jesus and Adron. Granted, with an entire album condensed into 2 1/2 minutes, it’s impossible to be sure, but if this is what Warp Records is putting forward as a taster, we shouldn’t expect too much MPC mayhem this time around.

YOUTH ON THE STREET: “I think we should destroy the bogus capitalist process that is destroying youth culture.”
Sounds nice, but of course, history and human nature have proven that, even though Big Biz is fucked up, even in a world without the profit motive to blame, you’d still have to destroy the cult of personality, and the (unintentionally ironic) tyranny of the herdspeak created by rebelling, identity-seeking youth, in addition to the inherent fetishism of fame which can bring out the worst in us and, as has been said, makes a man take things over, and which can eff up even the best-laid plans of artist. But I digress…In any case, thus begins the latest from Radio Department which you can download for free… …MORE
